Solved Settings seem correct but basic networking and Internet sharing won't work.

Hello, forum readers !
I’m having a spot of bother with the following, so any help would be most appreciated:
I have a basic Internet Connection Sharing setup between two Vista computers.
At first, it was quite problematic to get them to recognise each other but when I ran a NET VIEW command they linked up with each other. Networking and Internet worked fine for many months until I tried to reverse the setup a few days ago, changing the second computer into the host computer. Unfortunately, this didn’t work so I went back to all the previous settings but now the computers will no longer “see” each other and there is no shared Internet connection on the second computer.
No Firewall settings have been changed. NET VIEW commands don't work (error 53 path not found). If I run a NET VIEW command on the 2nd computer looking for the ip of the host computer when I have just plugged in the crossover cable into the second computer, NET VIEW recognises the host computer, then frustratingly just a second later it won’t.
To my knowledge, I’ve done everything by the book to enable networking and Internet sharing, but the PCs are stubbornly refusing to see each other. I’ve heard that networking on Vista can sometimes be this difficult.
If anyone has any ideas out there how to rectify this, that would be super.
Here’s the set-up:
1st host computer Vista 32-bit Home Premium - Windows firewall.
File sharing enabled – Internet Sharing enabled – IP number standard Ipv4 192.168.0.1 – subnet mask 255.255.255.0
USB Modem

2nd computer laptop Vista 32-bit Home basic – Windows firewall
File sharing enabled – IP automatic number Ipv4 192.168.0.135 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Connected by RJ45 crossover cable.

Hello, if it were me, i would reset the IP"s on both computers and start the set up again . Here is an article that has some information, if you need it. Ipconfig: TCP/IP
Post back results of a reset please.

Thanks for your reply, Yard Dog. I did reset the IPs once again to the standard 192.168.0.1 on the host and then to automatic config on the second computer. It didn't work, but for some reason, two days and several reboots later the computers started to see each other again. However, there was still no Internet connection.

I decided to do something different today - on the 2nd computer, I clicked on the cross to the left of the globe representing the Internet connection in the Network and Sharing Centre. Vista did a diagnostic and said that there were several networks on my computers (2) possibly conflicting with the Internet connection and to disable one of them and redo a diagnostic. So, I disabled the second network connection in the Network and Sharing window. I reclicked on the diagnostics window and it said reactivate your network card and then miracle of miracles, it stated that the problem was resolved ! The globe appeared on the computers and I now have the Internet again. Although, all of this is a bit dodgy as I don't know quite how the computer managed to resolve the issue !

Well, i am glad it is solved. Sometimes that works out, sometimes you have to manually reset the settings. Bravo on doing that diagnostic repair. Have a Happy New Year. Stay connected.

Thanks, Yard Dog - and a Very Happy New Year to you too !

I should say that although everything works now, which is great, I still have to go through the rigmarole described in post #3 every time I've booted the computer. I used not to have to do this.

What I would like to know is why the computer detects 2 networks, 1 non-identified (Public) and 1 private network. Is that normal ? Surely, there's only one, i.e., a home network to the host computer with a local and Internet connection ? To clarify, I've attached some screenshots - my OS is in French, but I think they look pretty familiar to anyone acquainted with Vista.
#1 shows the problem when first booted; #2 after deactivating the network; and #3 after reactivation of the card and Windows has repaired the problem.

Thanks for any light you could shed on this.

Hmmm, seems you should be able to disable the public one and just have the home one enabled. Maybe someone else here has a thought ?

Exactly, Yard Dog. I try to disable the public one and it disables both. A bit strange... Perhaps it is this which is causing the problem ?

Yep, you should be able to right click the one to disable it. And not have to touch your home one.

Now, to be clear, in Control Panel, in the Network and Sharing Center, in the Manage Network Connections on the left side of that window, When you open that one up, is when you should see all connections, and here you should be able to right click and then disable the one not used.

Thanks for the instructions, Yard Dog. All it shows is one network (the "sans fil" WiFi connection doesn't count) - here:

but it shows 2 networks on the other window:

Why does it think there are two ? Does my own laptop count as one and the host as another ?
