WIFI Adapter "Service Failed" Issue
Applies To: Windows | Windows Vista | Performance and Maintenance
Although my new Netgear dual-band "N" WIFI ADAPTER functions optimally and, out of curiosity, I have re-installed it a few times by using the accompanying CD...there's a slight problem I'd like to resolve: When I click on the desktop WIFI Adapter ICON, I get a square-inch window with the message "SERVICE FAILED." Again, the WIFI itself is actually installed and is also listed under the Programs/Features and works perfectly well. When I bring up the icon under ALL PROGRAMS, the same result occurs: The same message reappears: "SERVICE FAILED." When I called the Netgear call center in the Philippines, the so-called tech support personnel advised me to just ignore the message and that I was the first caller about this issue, that "as long as the WIFI Adapter is providing you the desired signal quality and speed, just ignore it...." When I pressed further, a supervisor at the call center told me that she would pass on the info I had provided to their engineers in order to investigate the problem. Furthermore, the supervisor told me that no one else had contacted the call center on this particular matter. Yes, I have even disabled the built-in (Atheros) WIFI Adapters, but the "problem" in question still exists. Please note that this is a month-long phenomenon and that in the past every time I clicked on the ICON, the regular Netgear windows would come up, including the various optional hotspots, etc. I even updated the optional software successfully and restarted the notebook, as instructed by Microsoft's Windows Update. Please let me know what's going on and how I could correct this "cosmetic problem," if that's what it is, according to the Netgear tech support.

Below is the Microsoft Message details (IMPORTANT QUESTION, TOO: Please note that no router is involved and in the past two years, I have been encountering the problem only in recent weeks. Furthermore, I did DISABLE the built in ATHEROS WIFI's just in case there was a conflict with Netgear's WIFI; however, I didn't see any resolution to the "problem):
The Microsoft message I get is as follows:
