Cannot locate ANY wireless networks after Disk error

    Hello Vista Forums!

I'm having trouble with my internet access on my computer the specs are as:

    Vista 32bit Premium
    4GB RAM DDR (3.2 in 32bit ofc)
    Standard 350/370gb HDD
CPU is Phenom II quad 955BE
    GPU NVIDIA 460GTX

Basically, I'm on my computer alot, (I'm a student at uni), I very much hibernate my computer literally every time I go out, or goto bed, I only shutdown when necessary updates are available or a restart is required.

I believe the problem started when I was listening to music on iTunes, "Megadeth's 13 Album" and I switched to another artist and then later on tried listening to it again but the songs where missing, I checked the folder where they are located on my computer and it had become corrupt, which I thought was very odd indeed. Anyways I just reimported my CD and all is well again.

Anyhow thought I'd shutdown my computer after a regular Ccleaner check and quick analyzing of Defraggler. Thought "right I'll sort it all out after are shutdown and do it in the morning" However the computer took a very long time to shutdown but eventually did.

Booted my computer this morning, woke up to a CHKDSK (check disk) in the boot screen, loads of "orphan" files where being deleted but then recovered, very odd?

THe scan completed, everything was ok. So I logged in, some strange reason, AVG did not start up, (was gonna scan the whole system) and it will not start up now, some error about a write log. So I can't use this to scan my system.

The main fault though now is my wireless internet, it works for my lodger (windows cpu) and my dads mac pc. However the network sign is red and it will not find ANY networks atall. I checked device manager and there are no exclamation marks or questions.

And I cannot connect to the modem using a cable, the modem is downstairs and no phone sockets in my room

What the hell is wrong with my computer?

    Kind Regards

    Josh

The best way to start may be with a system restore. Go back to a week before the problem and see if that helps.
    System Restore - How to

    Before the Restore
Run a full anti virus scan.

If none of this helps we will try to test your hard drive, a bad hard drive may be a potential cause.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply.

I read your reply on my phone, and just read the bit about restore so I did that, then found that you said run a full virus scan.

However I'm trying to update my avg or unisntalling it and reinstalling but Its just useless, I'm now starting to think I have a virus, because I was unable to read my memory sticks and hook up my HTC in order to move he exe. files from my phone to cmp

That was a result AFTER restoring to an older point (6days ago)

I've downloaded Microsoft Security Tools, and I'm gonna give it a go, see if It finds anything.

Oh one last thing, using defraggler, it said that my HD is "good" and I did a CMD command thing and it said that my :C was not "dirty"

    Thanks again,

    Josh

So far so good. The defraggler and cmd may not give a true result. Use the Seagate test for the Hard Drive. If you pass we can forget about HD problems

Harddrive scan usings SeaTools - SeaToolsfor Windows | Seagate - Both long and shorttests

Ok, so installed and manually updated M$ tools, and also installed SeaTools HD test thing

Atm, did a quick scan, nothing found, moving onto a long scan (full) and I'll post the results later.

SeaTools, did a SMART scan, was really quick, nothing wrong, it "passed"
Doing a short generic test, its taking quite a while, its been around the 1/8 of the bar for some 15minutes. Will do a long generic test afterwards.

    Thanks,

I think that you will pass. I do not think that the problem is due to the HD, but you mentioned it and I suggested the test so that we could move on without question about the HD.

Ok, Short Test done, nothing wrong.

Long test says at the moment 3:02 - no idea what that means,

Any ideas what to do next?

I do really appreciate your help, better than paying £40 to get a shop to take a look at it

Although, just checked out my Device Manager, my REALTEK 8668/8111 LAN has an exclamation mark, but the usb adapter is "fine" according to windows.

Just fixed it with the latest update 2010 one, there is a 20th Jan 2012 but the download won't start, its forbidden on Realteks page :/

Still its fixed, no ! mark anymore
