Need help with dorm room router

My problem is I can't have internet access on my computer and play xbox at the same time .. technically I can, but my online gaming experience is horrible because I can't find games/join friends while connecting through the router (Linksys WRT120N)...
I've tried port forwarding and all the obvious suggestions but none work because my dorm has a moderate NAT set and it seems the router just screws up the connection even more. So its like

[Dorm network with moderate NAT] --> [My router with settings to correct the moderate NAT to open] --> [Xbox with strict NAT; can't join people/games]

Now I can connect the xbox directly (not through the router) and everything is perfectly fine but I obviously have no internet access on my laptop (we only get 1 connection point per room).. I can put the router in a different room and connect the xbox directly into the wall and laptop wirelessly to the router but the problem with that is the connection drops out anywhere from every 20 seconds to 5 minutes. It sucks. I talked to the IT dept and they said its because there are so many people with other routers that its just interference

My main questions: Is there a way I can bridge the router so its like connecting my xbox directly into the wall? Will I be able to connect my laptop to that and have internet access at the same time? Any suggestions for the dropped connection in another room?

Hi,

Set-up a dedicated DMZ Server as per the attached picture in your router. The IP address is the one for your XBox (Not as shown): -

Tried it already and it doesn't work.. I can get on Xbox Live but can't connect to friends or join games; its sporadic. I test the connection and it will fail 3 out of 5 times and say everything from its a DNS problem, to an ICMP problem, to a problem with Xbox Live. All say to reset the router..

Probably a bandwidth issue .

Probably, there are literally around 15 different networks that my laptop sees.. I think I managed to fix the dropped connection problem though, I simply switched from channel 6 to 11 and have been fully connected since.

Yeah, i have my router set on ch. 11 .. not used that much, and my wireless network picks up a strong signal.

Hi,

Your Network connection sounds odd & is "Pre-routed" hence the DMZ server setting in your router does not work as it is being blocked by the other router.

Yet, you say if you connect your Xbox direct it becomes an "Open" connection? Not sure where to go with that one other than to suggest a "Switch" to open up another connection point. One for the router & one for the XBox.

Any thoughts on that?

No it doesn't become 'open' ever on the xbox.. The dorm network is set up so that nobody has an Open NAT as that would just cause conflict between devices with port forwarding, so they have everyone set to Moderate and there is no changing that. I can join games and friends online when I'm directly connected (with moderate NAT).. but when I connect through the router my NAT becomes Strict and I can't join games/friends at all.

Also the dropped connection problem came back again and no channel seems to correct it.

Would getting a switch allow me to connect both laptop and xbox to the same connection without going through a router first?

My Computer

Hi,

Yes, but only via wire connection only. Sounds as though yuor router is the issue if it goes to a "strict" connection & the only way to change that is a setting in the router.
