slow speeds

hi everyone

I have been having a problem with my internet speed, at the moment it is running
at .50mbs per sec.
I keep talking to my ISP and they keep telling me to check the same things.
This time they are telling me that

1 it could be my computer causing the problem
2 it could be my cordless phones causing the problem
3 it could be a virus or my firewall causing the problem

they have told me to plug my phone into the test socket and umplug my cordless
phones. All of this I have done before, it has not made any difference.
they have told me to plug an ethernet cable into the computer and leave it in for 72 hours and keep a check on speed using the bt speedchecker.
all of this i have done before. Can you please tell me if any of these things
can cause slow speeds and if not what could be causing the problem

Perhaps it might be easier if you told us your system specs, your ISP rated speed, and your network setup.

i have sent snippet of my system.
my router is a ZyXEL wireless router and the speed i normally get is .750megs per sec.
I know that it is not very fast, but that is all i can get they tell me because of the
area that i live in.
what do you need to know about my network system

I am with the post office on a wireless network
I have just checked my speed and it has gone back up to .932mbs.
which is pretty good for my connection.
Why is this speed going up and down like a yoyo

since I sent you my last reply, my speed has been up and down.

.05mbs up to 1.2mbs then down to .590mbs and then back up to .852mbs.
This all happened in the space of a couple of hours, can you tell me why
this is happening.

Do you have a cable modem?

If so, shut off your router. Then unplug the modem. Shut down.

Plug in the modem for a couple of minutes.

Then, turn off the router for a couple of minutes.

Restart.

You could also run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility and reboot. This will clean out temporary internet files and empty the recycle bin. Can make browsing speedier.
