How can i UNshare my C: drive

Due to problems between Vista and a Sync program, I am left with a drive C: that has several folders which "may or may not" be shared on my home network.

Is there a way (perhaps a command line or utility program) to pass thru my C: drive and completely UNSHARE all folders & files, just like after a fresh installation?

Of course, it shouldn't mess with the <share>$ items.

As of now, every time I select "Stop Sharing" to folders that really aren't being shared anyway, I get a dreaded error: Cannot stop because 'This folder is in a shared folder' which, or course it isn't.

I just want to clean things up and start from scratch.

    Hi,

Go to the Network and Sharing Center, & turn off public folder sharing.

Select manage on your "My computer" icon (Desktop or Start menu). Now go to "Shared Folders" & identify the shared folders on your system to check if you need to stop any more folders.

To stop the other folders you will need to find the uppermost folder & stop that folder share.

Please post a picture of the results to help us assist you further. OK?

    Lottie,
I have always had public sharing turned OFF, and don't have any files in \Users\Public.

Previously, I had tried your suggestion. I tried to remove SHARE from the parent folder, but got the same error message on \Users and \Users\Steven (my stuff).

    Thanks for your help.

    Ok,

Lets look at this from the problem software point of view.

What is the problem software & what exactly was the problem with it?

Re: How can i UNshare my C: drive

Thanks for replying Lottie. I finally got everything UNshared, started from scratch and have things pretty well shared as I wish.

UNFORTUNATELY, this has not solved my problem. Maybe you can help or someone will see this post and come to my aid.

I think the problem rests with differences between Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate.

It appears to me that my Sync program fails because, as far as sharing is concerned, Microsoft treats VHomePremium and VUltimate as different operating systems.

Here's a brief summary of my setup:

    LAPTOP...................... DESKTOP
    wireless connection...... wired connection
    Vista Home Premium.....Vista Ultimate

Now, When I go to windows explorer, I get different results, depending on which computer I am using.

If I am sitting at my ULTIMATE desktop computer, everything works just perfectly.

However, if I am sitting at my HOME PREMIUM laptop computer, where I spend 95% of my time, I cannot explore the shared folders & files on my ULTIMATE desktop. Instead, I get a "login" window, saying "Connect to DESKTOP", which asks for a login and password. This stops windows exploring & the sync program.

Keep in mind, on ULTIMATE desktop, I am sharing exactly the same folders as on my laptop, and with exactly the same permissions.
I logon to both computers with the same administrator account, same password, same everything.
I have tried with & without "password protected sharing".
    No consistent differences.

If you (or someone) can solve this, you'll have a new BFF.

    Thanks & best wishes,

Re: How can i UNshare my C: drive

    Hi,

You are correct the problem is with the difference in the systems. Unfortunately my Ultimate PC is mothballed & I do not have access to it.

If I remember right there are deeper levels on the vista ultimate, so, dig deeper into the network & sharing stuff & you will find the answer.

Sorry that I can only point you in the direction of the answer but I am sure you will find it there. OK?

    Paul.

    You show:

Vista Home premium 32 bit (SP2 plus)

I have Vista Home Premium SP2 but I've never seen plus advertised anywhere and Google only shows your posts, where can I download it?

    Hi,

The plus is manually added, as there have been updates since SP2 was released.

    It is not downloadable!
