Solved Folder/File Access is Denied!

My daughter's Compaq CQ-50 laptop (running Windows Vista, 32-bit I presume) "died" the other day, so in attempt to recover the data files from the hard drive, I purchased an external drive enclosure.

When I connect the hard drive to my desktop PC running Windows XP Pro, and try to view or copy the contents of many (but not all) of the folders from Explorer, I get "[folder name] is not accessible. Access is denied."

I've read several postings about changing the permissions from the Security tab under Properties, but that tab is not visible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am pretty much clueless what to do!

I believe the reason for the problem is because, in Vista, My Picture, My Music and My Video are not real folders. They are pointers (forget the actual name) to the Pictures, Music and Videos in the Kim directory for software that uses the My.....

I believe you're correct ... and that's why those particular folders are "grayed out" I presume? I looked at the C:\Users\Kim\Pictures folder and was able to view and open the files in that folder!

Thanks! Clearly mine was a novice question, with a far simpler solution than I expected.

I knew about it since I had the same problem when I moved from Win 98 to Vista. I did some research on the web or read about it in a magazine. Until recently, I didn't know about this forum.
