Solved Machine does not get IP at startup

nmrm

Member
Hello,

I have a small problem: when I reboot my computer I do not always get a valid IP from my router hub without having to type "ipconfig /renew" at the command line; or without obtaining a new IP address or reload network interface in diagnose and repair connection problems; or restarting the DHCP Client service.

In resume: I generally cannot access internet at startup of vista because the DHCP does not assign me a valid private IP to access outside internet.

Is there any fix to this problem?
Has this problem already been reported?
What is the cause?

Thanks for any help, resolution or fix to this problem,
Kind regards,
Nuno Magalhães.

I think that fixed it.
Did lots of reboots and shutdowns and got internet all the times.

By the way, what DNS has to do with DHCP client getting an IP address?
Don't know if it's of any interest but I'm sure the problem occurred right after I set the DNS resolver IP addresses to fixed IP addresses in the Local Area connection IPv4 properties.

Kind regards,
Nuno Magalhães.

DNS doesn't really have anything to do with DHCP. DNS is responsible for converting hostnames to IP addresses. DHCP is used to assign dynamic IP addresses, and their corresponding subnet masks, to computers running TCP/IP within it's network.

How is your router DHCP configured? Could you take a few screenshots of the router page for us please? :)

What I thought was wrong: guess what? This afternoon I turned on my computer and no internet (event with ipconfig /flushdns) and reboot. So it has nothing to do with it. Sorry for my early reply.

What info do you want to know? I don't think there's the possibility of configuring DHCP in my router but I post some screens on attach.

Anyone have any more ideas?

Thanks and Kind regards,
Nuno Magalhães.

I've attached a batch file that will reset your internet connection, reset your hosts file and flush your DNS. Could you please download it and run it?

Hopefully this should fix your connectivity problems, if not, we'll have to dig deeper.

No. That didn't work either. This morning... no internet at startup.
Any other suggestions?

Hello again,

I noticed an article from microsoft site (Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers) that it states the following:
1) I have to set DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle to 1, but as you can see I don't even have that key
2) If the router doesn't support broadcast I had to set DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag to 0, instead of step 1

I'm attaching a screenshot without valid ip at startup and another with valid ip at startup.
How can I know if my router supports dhcp broadcast? Is there any GUI friendly way to do this?

Any help appreciated,
Kind Regards,
Nuno Magalhães.

Hello Nuno,

My apologies for the late reply, I'm right in the middle of exams at the moment and most of my time is going towards revision.

Try following the steps outlined in that tutorial to make the key. Sometimes in Windows, if you haven't changed a setting before, there won't be a registry key for it.

To resolve this issue yourself, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Close Registry Editor.

Then reboot and see if you have the problem. If you still do, change the value data to 0 and reboot again.

Short of getting WireShark on it, I don't know how to check this flag on your router; and I don't even know if WireShark can show this. Is there any settings page on your router which allows you to change the DHCP settings? I would be very surprised if there isn't :)

Hi Tom,
It worked with value 1 (created a registry entry DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle with value 1).

Nuno

I run into this problem every now and then, not as persistent as nmrm does, but it happens. When I went to look for that registry key though, the folder and the key are not present. The folder {GUI} it at the very end. Unfortunately since I don't get the problem as much, I don't want to create the value and risk further destabilization. I guess I'm not pissed enough yet, lol.

Hi Elitevaz,

Make a System Restore Point then you're free to play as much as you want with minimal risk :) I don't see why making this key and value would cause instability, but sod's law might have it's way!

The big issue is, I can't even tell if it worked, because I encounter the error so infrequent. Right now it's not that big of a deal for me, but about a year or two ago I was getting pretty much on every startup.

If it doesn't occur often enough to test a potential solution then I really don't know how I can help :( Sorry!
