    Working network reported as "unknown"

This is a problem that was reported and discussed a lot 2 or 3 years go, but mine has a twist.

    Equipment: ASUS U80A laptop
    OS: vista home premium, 64-bit

    Problem:
    - network icon in systray has red 'X' over it
    - Hovering over icon, message says "Connection Status: Unknown"
    " Access denied"
    - Right click on icon:
If wifi, shows wifi connections. I am connected to one.
If cable, shows "No connections found", but network is connected
    - In Network and Sharing: network shows as "Unknown", next line says
    "access denied"

Now here's the twist - this happens only for one user. The Administrator account on the computer does not have this problem. That seems to eliminate a lot of hardware & driver potential problems.

I have searched forums and tried everything I could find:
    ... net localgroups...
    ... turn off power ...
    ... update driver ...
... can't mess with network properties, since it doesn't
    show a network...

Lots of solutions that don't work, but the situation is slightly different. Could there be something in the user profile that causes this?

    Thanks,
    Randypro

Randy as a test create a new user account, if the intenet works then it is a corrupted account. You will have to delete it and create a new account.

Well there's the thing - this is a new account that I created to resolve some other user-related errors. I followed MS's suggestion on this: created the new account, then copied all the files & folders from the old account except ntuser.dat and ntuser.log. Should I have left something else behind?

The way to find out for sure is to create another new account and before transferring anything over, try and see if you get internet.

Well, that worked. Previously, I had created a new account, then did a copy and paste from the old account of everything except the system files, ntuser*. The account had other problems too, such as, although I created it as a administrator account, it reverted to Standard, and I could not change it back. (The Internet is full of solutions for that, as well, none of which worked).

This time, I created the new account, verified that everything worked as expected. Then I transferred the old stuff a folder at a time, hoping I could spot what brought the problem over. Nothing did. It still works fine.

    Thanks for the advice.
