Cannot get LAN (eithernet connection) working

I have a Gateway desk top Model LX6810-01 with Intel COre2 Quad Q8200 with 8GB RAM, running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit.

A week ago this computer died. I did some trouble shooting and found that the power supply had died (I am an Electronics Technician with 39 years experience on the bench). I ordered the approiate 400 watt Dynex PS to replace it, installed it, works fine. Everything is working fine except I cannot get the LAN to work. I thought perhaps the LAN driver had somehow gotten corrupted so I went to the Gateway web site on my other desk top and downloaded the driver for the particular LAN needed and put it on a thumb drive and loaded and installed it on the troubled machine. I still could not connect to the internet.

I started checking various things and went to the Windows Device Manager screen and there was the tell tale yellow marker by the Network Device indicating a problem. I did a Restart and went into the BIOS settings and found that for some unknown reason the LAN had been 'disabled'. I clicked on 'Enable' and saved the setting and exited and rebooted. Voila, I had my LAN working and connected to the internet just fine. A happy camper and Vista user once again, I thought.

Next day the trouble is back again, cannot connect to the internet. Went back to the BIOS, LAN is still 'Enabled' so I saved and exited. Went back to the Device Manager screen and the LAN is not even shown. So I clicked on 'Unhide' and there was the LAN. with no 'markers' by it. (WHY would it be 'hidden' now??)

When I open the Network and Sharing Center in windows over in the left hand column it is headed with the word TASKS. At the bottom of that list is "Diagnos & Repair" when I click on that D&R I get back the message, quote "This computer does not have a network adapter installed and configured".

Do you think that the failing power supply took out the 'on board' LAN device before it completely died? Remember, the LAN did work for ONE day just fine after installing the new power supply.

I have run completely out of ideas at this point. BIOS shows enabled, Device Manager shows no problem. What am I missing here? and why is the LAN now 'hidden' in Device Manager??

Thanks guys and gals,
Peace IS coming
