Is true that setting a DNS IP Address to 8.8.8.8 or 208.67.222.222 can speedup internet download speed and why can improve internet download speed?

Improves browsing faster and makes it more secure, but wont improve download speed.

208.67.222.222 is one of the open DNS IP addresses while 8.8.8.8 is used by Google DNS. Either may be faster than what you are using now which is usually the DNS server operated by your ISP. In some case it can be substantially slower, particularly if you do not live in the US. It all depends on how well your ISP DNS server performs. As this server is probably close than others it will have an edge, but there are many other factors that come into play as well. The only way to tell is to try.

There is a downside to using Open DNS, and possibly Google as well. With most DNS servers when you attempt to go to a website that does not exist the browser will simply show an error message. With Open DNS you will be taken to a site displaying advertising. Downloads may also be slower.

If you want the best DNS for your comp try this from Shields UP. It lets you find the fastest but also has the option to set you own list.

Also you can set a caching only DNS as used on many Linux systems. I believe the one built into W7 is already pretty good. But Vista and XP may benefit. I'm not sure on Vista how the built in caching compares but I'm sure I used it on XP with good results. It may be worth trying.

I'm sure there are several free ones around. Just search the big freeware download sites... sourceforge.net is probably a good bet.

You mean it find a specific website faster and that my computer will load that website faster too, because it found a website faster than any other DNS server?


What do you mean more secure?

You mean google 8.8.8.8 and 208.67.222.222 open DNS are better configured their DNS security settings?

Without downloading the apps is possible using cmd or any windows built-in tools to test which DNS server IP Address is faster for my pc?

As I said, the only way is to try it. There are many factors involved. But unless your ISP's DNS server has issues it is unlikely to make much difference in performance. Most likely it does not.

Cache stores your recently website visits made and stores it so that the IP address can be found without the need to request it from the DNS server therefore reducing the amount of time it takes to navigate your machine to that website

I see, but how I notice difference in performance? You mean I browse to any website with my ISP DNS server IP Address and then change to public DNS server IP Address however usually it takes a matter of few seconds to load a webpage so is kind of hard to notice the differences.

Browser performance is quite subjective. In most situations you won't notice a difference. Unless your ISPs DNS server has issues (unusual) you probably won't be able to tell the difference.

A slow loading page is going to load slowly. Once it starts to load the address translation is long over with. An optimized dns lookup only gets rid of that initial lag connecting to the page. If the page has lots of 3rd party graphics on other servers invoking other name lookups then I guess you might notice some speed-up. But it's not going to turn 5 KB/s into broadband. :)

Miles is true, you will find that a site like MSN.com will take awhile to load with any DNS server since the site is just a framework with elements from other elements which also need translating. To view established links go to command prompt and type the following:
