I setup and connected VPN connection through my smartphone to my home computer, but I don't know how to get access to files via my smartphone through VPN Connection. Do I use my smartphone internet explorer to access my home computer files or how?

Regard,
Thanks.

What application are you using to establish the VPN connection? A VPN connection should allow a remote device outside the LAN act as if it was and should be able to access resources limited only to that LAN the same way as if it was connected to it.

Just a couple of questions to help us give you the best support:

What phone are you using and what OS does it have (Android, iOS... etc? )

What VPN application are you using on the server to initiate the remote connection?

What is the OS of the home computer you wish to access and is there a shared folder set? If so what are the sharing permissions applied?

Don't worry if you can't answer all the questions, we will do our best with the information provided

Hi ShadowJK,

I am using Android smartphone

What is the OS of the home computer you wish to access and is there a shared folder set? If so what are the sharing permissions applied?
Windows 7 yes I do shared some folders with write permission.

I mean I made a successful VPN connection on my smartphone I just don't know how to access to the shared folders of my computer on my smartphone.

Regard,
Thanks.

If you made a successful VPN connection then you will need a separate application to access the folder.

If I remember from when I had an Android device I believe that this application allows you to access network shares - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en

When you setup the share remember to use the full UNC path. For example if I shared a folder called test on a machine called 'Josh-PC' then I would enter the following:

\\Josh-PC\test

Hope This Helps,
Josh! :)

Hi ShadowJK,
Is there a way without installing 3rd party software to access my computer share resources after setup and connect to a successful VPN connection?

Regard,
Thanks.

With a stock version of android that came pre-installed with the phone? No not possible and will require another application to access the UNC path since any default file explorers with android are limited to local locations.

It could be possible with a rooted and custom version of Android however unless you have the custom firmware I do not see why you wouldn't use a free application that could complete your task without a reinstall of your OS

Please understand that the task you wish to complete is rare for a phone therefore

Josh! :)

Hi ShadowJK,
I downloaded and install and tested out ES Files Manager it works fine with LAN network, I can create folder and files to my computer using my android phone, but it work only when I connected to LAN network at my home, I can't connect if I move outside the LAN network.
My points is to use VPN connection that can connect to my computer to add and remove files in my computer in a remote location not using LAN network.

Regard,
Thanks.

If you had setup a VPN connection then the access should work. A VPN fools local clients in believing the VPN device is on its subnet.

When trying the share did you make sure you used the ip address instead of the hostname?

For example:

Code:
\\IP_ADDRESS\share

Hi ShadowJK,
Yeah ShadownJK i never use \\hostname\share i always only use \\IpAddress\share to access resources.

However the apps that you recommended there's no URL bar like windows explorer, only options which let you setup a LAN or FTP network.

regard,
thanks.

For example:

Code:
\\IP_ADDRESS\share

A VPN fools your device into believing it is in the LAN therefore the above should be all that you need.

How are you making the VPN connection? Please understand that a remote connection is NOT the same as a VPN connection.

If indeed a remote connection then you will find it difficult to access that share because of a network protocol called NAT? (Network Address Translation). This converts your private IP addresses which are blocked on the internet into your single public IP address. The issue is when you try to connect remotely your router will not know what device you are trying to talk to.

It may be possible to get around this however I have not done so myself and your ISP may cause some issues if you receive your public IP address via DHCP

Hi ShadowJK,
How are you making the VPN connection?
I am using the built-in VPN client apps on android phone and make a successful connection, however what I don't really understand is the ES file manager LAN options which I connected through my home network by typing the LAN of my home network, what I don't know if I need to change to a public IP Address of my home ISP router if I try to connect from my friend house or any WIFI Hostpot?

Regard
Thanks.

Sounds similar to a remote connection rather than a VPN connection.

You cannot access a share from outside the internet since the share is broadcast on the LAN which ends at the router.

OpenVPN - Open Source VPN

This may be somthing that you might want to look at to initiate the VPN connection however I am not familiar with how to set it up.

Typically, cloud storage services were invented for this reason since VPNs required a lot of technical knowledge and requires a server to be active on the other end.

You may want to look into some cloud based storage:

Skydrive (7GB Free storage) - https://skydrive.live.com

Dropbox (2GB Free Storage) - https://www.dropbox.com/

Google Drive (15GB Free Storage) Google Drive
