Internet Speed Question

If I am putting this in the wrong place please let me know.

I have Time Warner Internet Business Class. It is supposed to be the fastest. Yet, the only speed test that shows me getting 50 is their own speed test site. All the other speed sites show me getting 25 - 27.

How can I tell if I'm paying for a dead horse, so to speak.

Hi,

I would record some test (screen shots etc..) from various places & then send in an email request for support. I would then ask for an explanation for the differences.

OK?

I've noticed some of the "speed test" sites use a sample file small enough that it can be influenced by "surge" or initial spike as the download starts. On Comcast they called it "Powerboost." I've found a good test of download speed is to use an unlimited news server like GigaNews with a sizeable download. Say a few GB in size. Usually you'll get a steady reading. The speed test site apps are usually fine for gauging upload speed.

I confronted a tech in person and he said those other speed sites are not good and that it also depends on where the info is sent...like what city. You have to pick the closest location and TW is the only one with Buffalo NY. And that is why theirs is the most accurate. It just seems like my computer is very slow.

I would try GigaNews as a free trial. But I believe even on Comcast with the "business class" options it's supposed to be a constant download speed rather than a "power boost." The programmer who does Newsbin download program has Comcast business class and according to him he gets a constant 50 Mb/s download. Trouble with internet is usually your choices are limited.

It might be worth the Giganews trial just to provide data and tell your ISP if you advertise a certain speed and can't come close to it in practice then you ought to prorate a discount in line with the speed deficit. It's like paying $4 a gallon for gas and only getting litres instead of gallons.

Hi,

If you're really curious, worried, insecure, or whatever... I think this suggestion is the best and quickest way to go... and most likely, you don't even need to email 'em... just get them on the phone or go to their Live Chat... I've got TWC Upstate NY... can't stand 'em... i won't get into it... I don't have any other choices here... but i've had good experiences with their tech support... just some bad experiences with their used-car-salesman like reps... i won't get into it... they have a very nice Online Chat which usually works out good, unless you're attempting to discuss personal and/or sensitive account topics... then they send you to the telephone... i'm working with their "Turbo" speed... and just days ago, while re-negotiating my contract (sheesh!)... i did some tests while they they were on the phone and things looked good... Not too long ago, I had their "Turtle" speed, and when I paid the upgrade charge for Turbo speed, when it kicked in, my web experience did become noticeably faster...

I believe you can trust them. I really don't believe TWC would intentionally screw people out of their chosen internet package speeds... or allow their "System" to be lack integrity... they wouldn't get away with it... they couldn't keep it a secret... and more than a few of their bazillion customers would be on them for it.

I say just let it go. Life is too short to fuss about such things and spend your most valuable precious few life moments running a bunch of technogeek internet speed tests... there's probably as many factors that affect your web speed at any given moment as their are TWC sales reps... I say, use the time to take your dogs for a walk instead... think about the wonderful time you're having while not spending it with TWC Tech Reps... and if you don't have any dogs, get some...
