Ram & CPU trouble in POST

how do i find out in vista if my ram is running at 6400 mode? My bios post screen is telling me that its running in 4300 mode & that my cpu only does 2.2ghz in my bios system information (it does 2.83ghz as confirmed by cpu-z)

Bios for my board, p5w64, is latest 1201 and has been reset before i installed cpu.

first off i just want to know if my ram is running at 6400 mode while in windows. then ill try and sort the bios out.

i take it for ''6400 mode'' you mean 800mhz, but whats ''4300 mode''..?? 400mhz..??

how fast is your RAM reported as being on the BIOS splash screen at start up..??, it dosent say 4300 does it..?? are you running ''dual channel'' (matching sticks)

also are you saying that the splash screen shows the CPU @ 2.2ghz, but inside windows its reporting 2.8ghz..??

sorry the OP was a little unclear.....

Re: Ram & CPU trouble in POST

np, im a bit confused myself. My cpu is reported as 2.83ghz now, its just the ram which is causing trouble.

I have everything set to auto and the bios used to report ram running at pc2 5300. now its gone down to 4300 for some reason. Cant seem to find what mhz its running at (cpu-z reports as being 333.3 mhz which would be 667mhz i guess).

Also, whenever i restart, the enitre computer will shut down for 5 secs before rebooting. Thats even restarting from within the o/s and from the bios.

ok.......333mhz would be 667mhz in ''dual channel'' which = pc5300, but you have pc6400 (800mhz) yes..??

you'll need to enter the BIOS & change the RAM divider, hopefully your board will allow this otherwise you'll be stuck @ 667mhz...

the setting will be in the ''advanced options'', look for ''divider'' or ''RAM frequency'', this will either give you a set of ratios or a set of possible frequencies....

you should currently be @ a ratio of 1-1 (which is the lowest on an intel rig), take it up a notch & reboot, if its a ''frequency'' list thats even easier, just set it as close to 800mhz as you can & reboot.....

if this fails to post you may need to give the sticks a voltage boost (board willing of course), so just adjust the ''V-DIMM'' setting up a notch if needed.

you shouldn't have to touch the timings, but if all the above fails we can play around with them later.....

Re: Ram & CPU trouble in POST

ok looks like i got that sorted.

what could be causing the 5 second delay when i want to reboot? its weird, if i reset the cmos it wont happen, but i need to change some of the settings, even 1, and it will trigger it.
