You have speedstepping or as amd calls it "cool n quiet" on. It slows your system down so as to save power.

In the BIOS, its called C1e or something like that... do a google search on your mobo, and it'll tell you the exact setting.

Before overclocking, you'll want to turn that off.

Watch your temps on your cpu, as your TIMs probably getting old and dry, and i'm betting youre still on stock hsf.

I am on a desktop, got a hp pavilion model a6214x, vista 32-bit, geforce 7600gt graphics card, ddr2 memory, asus leonite2 motherboard, bios-phoenix technologies

Not sure how much more i can noob it, but ALL cpus have a power saver mode, called intel speedstep, or amd cool n quiet.
The cpu slows down and bthe computer uses less power. In the BIOS, the setting for most intel chip boards is called c1e and something else.

Now, as you have a prebuilt computer, its going to be next to impossible to overclock. Theres windows ways to do it, but i don't trust them, or know about them.

Because your systems old, its going to heat up fast, so if you do try it, becareful and watch your temperatures or you'll fry your computer.

So would i turn off the c1e in the bios to stop this problem?

Hi,

If you are able to change that setting then try it, you can always reset it next boot (Take a note of the setting first).

It doesn't hurt to try?

I'm almost certain he'll not be able to as prebuilts lock their BIOS's so you can barely do anything.

Hi,

Try this: -

Control panel
Power options
select Performance

Change plan & then advanced settings

Scroll down the list until you see Proccessor power management

Now you can select a Max & Min speed for the CPU.

I don't believe the CPU settings in Power Options will make a difference because that's not where the change is coming from and it simply controls the minimum and maximum percentages - not changes to the speed as the computer is running.

Do you have the most recent BIOS? Perhaps the most recent version has the controls you want - but no guarantees. If what is said above is accurate, these should be what you need (but double-check to be absolutely certain): P5LP-LE Motherboard BIOS Update HP Pavilion a6214x Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)=.

If you do manage somehow to change the settings so it always runs at the max, then I recommend you install a temperature monitor to make sure you don't overheat and damage your processor and maybe even other nearby components. I don't recommend doing this max setting, but it's your decision, your risk, and your computer you're putting on the line. In fact, the monitor can't hurt even if you make no changes.

Here's a free software tool that will monitor the temperature: Core Temp. Also, here's a sidebar gadget that will show you the information on your desktop so you can see it in real time: Core Temp - Add Ons.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
