Boostspeed any good?

Hi,

my 2 gb DDr3-1333 mhz does not cut it anymore.

Right contstantly the computer is usting between 80 and 85 % without me doing anything, except typing here.

Diskeeper 2008, Outlook consume alot of memory, Search Index, Svchost (some 10 different system programs), etc.

So i need more Ram. But at the same time i was thinking of buying "Boostspeed" or a program like that to clear memory, so a shutdown is not needed every day.

Anyone familiar with this kind of program?

Thanks,

François

Re: Boostspeed any good?

Get more RAM

Why add another program that's going to take up more memory?

Re: Boostspeed any good?

You do know that Vista pre-caches programs it thinks you may use so they launch faster, right? And that this pre-caching takes up most of your RAM usage. And that Vista surrenders RAM used for caching just as if it were empty.

In usage, have you noticed the system paging??

Re: Boostspeed any good?

Well Scotteq, no i did not know that.

I do not use a pagefile since this slows down system severely.

Clevo, Boostspeed claims they recover Ram that is blocked by certain programs. So in the end one should have more memory free right?

Anyway since no one has possitive things to say, i will skip the program

thanks

Re: Boostspeed any good?

Francois - What that means is that high "usage" isn't necessarily a sign that there's something wrong. Vista is filling memory which would otherwise be sitting idle with programs it thinks you may use.

Re: Boostspeed any good?

Prefetching is a service you can turn off/on. Buying memory to install in the PC will be better than USB stick/readyboost. I tried readyboost on my PC (vista x64 ultimate with 2 gig of ram) and I allocated 4 gig of mem on the usb stick. Did not notice a bit of diff.

Re: Boostspeed any good?

ok Scotteq, but it means i have to buy 2 gb extra since Corsair does not offer 512 mb memory sticks.....

thanks

Re: Boostspeed any good?

Francois,

Most people will see something like 1.25~1.5GB of memory "used" on a 2GB system. But please understand that RAM which has been used for Pre-fetching is surrendered to active applications just as if it were empty. You don't have to buy more memory unless you either want to, or because you want to see high idle numbers. That's why I asked if your system was paging to the HDD. If the system isn't hesitating/paging to the hard disc, then you aren't using all of your RAM and you don't actually have a problem. It's just a display.

Sorry if I'm bad at explaining this...
