Anyone help with explaining this?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone can explain this problem i'm having. I installed Photoshop CS3 today on Vista x64 Ultimate and gave it whizz to see if it worked ok - which it did - but i noticed that the start menu headings for the Photoshop programs are highlighted in yellow.
Here's a screen grab:

The thing is, when i right-click on the yellow highlights to send the Photoshop icon to my desktop as a shortcut, i get no menu just the Aero mouse cursor rotating for a split-second and then the right-click doesn't work at all nor the shut-down button doesn't work!

Now, i got the program off a mate who assured me it was from an original disc, but now i'm not too sure as it has all the hallmarks of a copy with a dodgy attachment - and no, i didn't see the disc in question as i just transfered the data from a folder on his drive onto a USB pen.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

i just tried it in my taskbar the ones in yellow will allow me to put them on the desktop so i dont think them being highlighted in yellow is an issue......
maybe u lost something in the transfer or did not get it all im sure when insalling programs it dosent all go to one place....i.e. registry entries

can u get the disc from him ..try that

failing that do u have sp1.....?

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

Well... The yellow just means it's newly installed, so that's not a problem...

When you right click and send a shortcut to the desktop - it works? or no? I played with it on my system, and there was zero lag/hesitation. The icon simply appeared on my desktop, and functioned.

I do see they are Adobe applications - To my knowledge, only Acrobat is "Officially" supported on Vista 64. The x86 version, Yes. But not 64. So the first thing I would do is double check that you can actually run those on your comp. The first thing to check: Right Click the app - Properties - Compatibility tab - check the box for 'Compatibility Mode' and use the drop down menu to select which - XP should do it, if anything...

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

Hi

Many thanks for the reassurance and the compatability issues could explain the inability to send the program to the desktop.
Will check it out later and post again.

Thanks

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

I got Photoshop cs3 and all is working ok on my vista 64.
Possibly your context menus are messed up. Have you run a registry cleaner recently or messed with the registry>?

No i haven't run any specific regcleaner, but have run Ad-Aware 2007. The thing is that CS3 runs perfectly fine, it's just when i right-click with the cursor on the yellow highlighted Adode programs as the above picture shows, then Vista refuses to allow the use of the right-click from then on and i have to press the reset button on my tower.

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

Hmm, strange. If you only want to put the shortcuts onto desktop, then just go into the program folder and do it from there. Hopefully you wont have the same right click problem from there. Have a go and let us know how you get on...

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

Hi

Nope, that doesn't work either - the .exe transfered over, but when clicked, it did exactly the same thing which is the cursor changes to the Vista Aero for a split second, then changes back to the cursor. Once this has happened, as explained before, the right-click won't work and even the shut-down button in the start menu refuses to work.
As i've stated in the opening post, i believe i may have some undesirable software attached to this program!

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

How about you uninstall the software and then reinstall, but before that do an complete virus and spyware check to be completely sure about your systems health. Could you be a bit more specific as to this undesirable software?

Re: Anyone help with explaining this?

Well, i found something Windows Defender came up with, but it was removed - C:\Windows\System32\drivers\SCDEmu.sys was the line. I also had " Generic.exe*32" popping up in my task manager, but i got rid of that rapidly. I've give the system a complete run through with Defender, Avast! 4.7 and ad-Aware 2007 Pro and it seems pretty clean - also got ad-Watch running and as stated i keep my eye constantly on my task manager.
You're probably right though - uninstall and then re-install to see if i'd messed up the first time. Also, i have UAC off, so could this have caused a problem when installing?
Thanks
