Comp not working after using Regcure

My computer doesn't work anymore after using Regcure, I wrote them but they didn't answer. I was wondering if any of you had a suggestion for me or if I should re-install Vista x64? Here is a copy of the message i sent them:

I have a brand new computer running on Vista x64 that worked perfectly well. Yesterday I downloaded and registered Regcure because I have it on my computer at work and I felt it would keep my new home comp in top shape. My new comp doesn’t work anymore…. I reinstalled my old comp so I could write you this message.

Here it what happened… I ran a scan with Regcure and it founds thousands of errors… I clicked on Fix errors and then rebooted my comp. It took forever for Windows to load and when it did I got the message System profile refers to an application that is not available. Windows could not connect to system profile. Now nothing works anymore… I have no Internet connection… Windows cannot find a modem… I have no sound… If I try to open the control panel it takes forever if/when it opens. I tried to open Regcure to make a restore got message Dependancy or Group Service Failed.

I rebooted in safe mode and finally got Regcure to run… I ticked the restore and clicked on restore. In less than a second it said done and the line describing the restore disappeared. I rebooted… still all the same problems.
I tried to do a system restore using windows but couldn’t find the option to do it. Ran it from a Dos prompt with the command rstrui.exe nothing happened it just hung. Used the windows help and clicked on click here from there to open system restore… after 4 or 5 minutes I finally got the message System Restore doesn’t seem to run on this computer.

Is there something that can be done? Do I need to re-install Windows Vista?

I don't mean to be impolite, but - if your computer was "working perfectly well", why the hell did you run RegCure on the thing????

But anyway, I think what you need to do here is try is:
  1. Boot into Safe Mode and use System Restore to restore to a point prior to installing RegCure.
  2. Boot from your Vista DVD and attempt to run System Restore from there.
  3. If either of the above options do not work, then boot from your Vista DVD and try a repair install
  4. If none of the above works, then you need to re-install.
Both members and visitors here will agree - DO NOT use Registry Cleaners. They end up causing more trouble than they solve.

Re: Comp not working after using Regcure

Thank you for the quick reply.

No you are not impolite and yes I have been asking myself the same question while hitting mysefl on the head.

I did it because I thought it was something that should be done rountinely to keep the comp working well, now I know better.

I have tried system restore but got the answer System Restore does not seem to work on this computer.

I did put the Vista CD in the drive last night but I only saw the option to Install Vista... I didn't see one to do a system restore or to do a repair install and was afraid to click on Instal Vista in case I started something I couldn't stop.

Should I be seeing the options you mention when I read my Vista CD?

Re: Comp not working after using Regcure

Tried the system restore from the DVD and it failed due to an unspecified error cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)

Tried a few times from different locations always the same thing.

Tried the Startup Repair but I got Starup Repair could not detect a problem.

So I have to try and re-install Vista? Is there anything I should know before I attempt this process?

Re: Comp not working after using Regcure

WOW!!!!
I clicked on restart and my comp rebooted and I saw my familiar desktop! Then I got the message System Restore has completed successfully and your files were not affected.
Don't know why I was getting the message that system restore had failed all the time, but I don't really care. I'm sooooo happy to have my comp back again!!!
Thank you so much for your time and help, I'm so very grateful.

In other words, System Restore actually worked. :P If I were you, I would immediately run a thorough CHKDSK as well.

Hi Ellebrius,

Can I refer you to my post in the 'Software' section of the forums entitled 'Registry cleaners! need advice'. The thread starter was xMichael.
You will always find people who swear by such programs, but I am not one of those.
