Setup has encountered an error during installation

Everytime I try to install office, I'm getting an error as quoted in the title.
Anyone knows what might cause this?

I am having a similar issue. I was running Office 2007 fine then this morning I installed Visio 2003. It wonked my whole MS setup. All of my office link icons are now windows default, indicating that the "Start in Directory" has been lost. When I try to repair my Office install, hoping to rewrite the registry entries, whether from the Control Panel or the disk I get the same error.

Hopefully someone has seen this problem and will respond. i will keep provide any update I come up with.

I suggest getting some help directly from Microsoft, They can investigate the cause and make a patch for you and anyone else experiencing the issue.

I had the same problem, what i did:
Deactivated UAC (log said some registry entries could not be performed)
Stopped AV/Firewall
And it worked.
Maybe it can help you, doesn't cost anything to try.

I am having the same issue...here are a couple entries from MS that might help:

The 2007 Office suite Setup program will not restart after an initial installation is interrupted (Regarding MS Office 2007 products in which the install was started, interrupted, and now won't finish)

Error message when you try to install a 2007 Office program: "Microsoft Office <Product_Name> 2007 encountered an error during setup. Error 1714" (This one seems to apply more to the problems with 2003 vs. 2007)
