DVD to DIVX or XVID authoring for Vista x64?

What program (preferably free) can be used to convert from DVD to DIVX or XVID. I am able to rip DVDs and was able to find compatible DIVX and XVID codecs, but I cannot find a reliable program to perform the video conversion.

Any suggestions?

Hi Cleefwood and Welcome to VistaX64.com!

The best free and open source program for doing exactly what you asked is AutoGK..

Very nice and detailed guide can be found here: Doom9.net - The Definitive DVD Backup Resource

Download Here: SourceForge.net: Gordian Knot

Cheers

Re: DVD to DIVX or XVID authoring for Vista x64?

I tried to create a DIVX file from a DVD rip using AutoGK and received an error. I currently have the free DIVX 6.8 codec installed. I also have the ffdshow codec package installed.

I was able to successfully encode an XVID with AGK from the same rip. The quality did not seem that great. I set the size to 1/3 of DVD-R (1,493 Mb) with DTS sound for a 2 hour movie. The quality issue might be subjective as I am pretty new to encoding. I assume that AGK is using the XVID codec from ffdshow as I do not have another codec installed.

I would like to try to encode to DIVX again, but the number of codecs available for Vista x64 is somewhat daunting and I'm not sure which one(s) I need. I also recently downloaded Media Center Classic and really like the simple interface. However, I am having trouble viewing any type of DIVX movies on it as there is no picture, only sound. They work fine on Win Media Center.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DVD to DIVX or XVID authoring for Vista x64?

Seems that I solved my problems. Apparently, I unknowingly had the 32-bit version of ffdshow installed along with the 64-bit version. Uninstalled both, then reinstalled 64-bit and encoding DIVX and XVIDs working fine now. Also, Media Player Classic working fine playing all media with codecs installed properly.

Movie I previously encoded was an older mid-80s title which is why quality was not as good as expected. Must have thought quality of original was higher than it was watching title on big screen with upconvert DVD player. Encoded a newer title to both formats and AGK worked like a charm, looked great, and took less than 1 hour. Way faster than my old AMD 64 3000.

Thanks for the recommendation, this site is great!
