Win95 Install hangs in Vista Compatibility Mode

I'm trying to install Mario Teaches Typing 2 (Yes, from the Win 95 days) on my Vista Windows Home Premium system using Compatibilty Mode. It starts installing okay, but then it hangs with this error message:

I need help from someone more techie than me... I was told that this software would work on Vista in compatibility mode before I bought it for my kids- there's just no better typing tutor out there for preschool boys- and I really, really want it to work. Please, if you have any ideas, post them...

Re: Win95 Install hangs in Vista Compatibility Mode

I admit, I don't know how to do it.

This is the perfect example of why I use MS Virtual PC - Microsoft implementation of virtual machines. With MS Virtual PC, I can host Windows 95, Win2K, XP, Linux all without rebooting. To run Windows 95, hosted by Vista, all you need is MS Virtual PC, a little drive space and your old install CD's for Windows 95. Mario typing would run great on a Windows 95 VM.

Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx

It's easier than you might guess.

Just trying to offer you a possible work around. Sorry, I couldn't help more. I wouldn't have answered at all, except I saw that no one had offered any suggestion so far.

Re: Win95 Install hangs in Vista Compatibility Mode

Actually, I agree with Solon - this might be the best way to go, especially as Win95 is not a resource hog....

Re: Win95 Install hangs in Vista Compatibility Mode

Thanks, guys. I might end up doing something like that. I tried it on a different computer and it worked (in compatibility mode) perfectly. Then I did a search on hpqste08.exe and found out it's a file installed by HP all-in-one printers. So that's what's hanging, even though what I'm doing has nothing to do with printing anything. I am currently dealing with HP's customer service trying to resolve the issue. Honestly- if that's really the problem- I may be out shopping for new non-HP printers tomorrow.

I bet Mario would look better on Virtual PC, though.

Re: Win95 Install hangs in Vista Compatibility Mode

Hey, congratulations! That's some good sleuthing that you did!

It's probably a shared dll that was updated when you installed your HP printer - though I'm not sure that helps. The thought is that maybe another update - not from HP - would 'fix' the problem.

Admittedly, Mario might not be the reason imagined by MS for using Virtual PC, but, hey, I bet Mario would be happy anyways!
