Hotmail & Windows Live Messenger Freeze on Vista--why??

I recently got a new laptop with Vista Ultimate x64 and am constantly having to force both Windows Live Messenger and Internet Explorer to "end task". WL messenger works if I've just turned my computer on, but if the laptop is closed while on or if it is left alone and goes into sleep mode when I return to the computer I can't open the program and it will say I am no longer signed on, yet it shows up on my task bar. I have to actually open the task manager, end the program, and then re-start it in order to use it. I am having a similar problem with hotmail. I log-in to my account and am able to use the program for a short amount of time, but soon after it freezes--I can't click on emails, new folders, or go to a new website in that tab on ie. It won't even let me close the tab.
This issue is incredibly frustrating--can anybody tell me how to fix it?
Thanks!

Hi Ceybee,

How much RAM does your computer have?

My Computer

That exactly describes the problem I'm having. I have an HP laptop with 3G of ram. Windows messenger will only work when I first start my computer. Hotmail is really bad in that sometimes I can read a few messeges before it freezes or just one. Its very rare if I can reply to a message or follow a link from an email without it freezing there. Once it freezes I can't even close the tab without going to the task manager. My rountine is open a tab read one email, it freezes, open a new tab, read one email, it freezes etc. I have basically giving up on checking my email at home and only do it on my work computer which uses XP. Any help on how to fix this would be great. I have been diligent in keeping up with the windows updates in hopes that one of them will fix this very problem.

Hi Shelly,

It sounds like your AntiVirus is slowing the Hotmail site Scripts down too much, Have you tried the desktop version of Hotmail instead?

I have exactly the same problem with a similar machine - an HP Pavilion dv7 which is a very new and pretty high end notebook. I run on Vista Home Premium however. Any advise would be greatly apprceiated. This is not caused by antivirus software or slow site scripts - my suspicion is poor Flash support; i.e. if there's any banners using certain Flash calls, Vista will crap out. An alternative theory is it's a Hotmail security issue -- it seems to work fine with emails from "unsafe" addresses.

Anyway any further ideas and advise would be greatly appreciated.

Update: the issue does not seem to occur when I run the 64-bit version of IE.

I am having the same problem...the only way i get it to work is to restart my laptop...very frustrating, how can we fix this? thx

My Computer

I just downloaded the desktop version of windows live and my hotmail account works beautifully with it. At least this way there isn't any freezing or problems with opening my attachments. Thanks a lot.

Too many people on new computers with more than adequate RAM are SUDDENLY having hotmail freezes...Vista..what is your response..solution? I'm having same problem. I can open hotmail, I can open ONE email..then that's it. Frozen screen. The only way to close is through Windows Task Manager. This is VERY frustrating. I'm thinking Vista has some serious issues...is Vista addressing this? Thx.

Hi Coregon,

I dont know why you assume its Vista`s problem or why you believe the Vista team should Fix Hotmail since their both completely different products managed by completely different people in completely seperate departments :sarc:

The blame and fault completely rests with the Hotmail Team...You can give them feedback about the problems here: https://feedback.live.com/default.aspx?scrx=1
You can also submit a bug report here: https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/default.aspx?SiteID=658 (Windows Live Team Center)

They are well aware about the problems because their are quite a few performance and bug reports already submitted on the Connect site for the Windows Live team, You should comment and vote on the bugs currently listed on the team`s Connect site link I posted above but just remember these things cant just be fixed overnight but they do keep status reports for each bug and problem listed on that Connect link above ;)

Steven,
Thx for info. The reason that I assume it is Vista causing the issue with Hotmail freezing up, is for the following reasons:

1. I never had this problem with XP, or older operating systems in more than 13 years of using Hotmail, not even once. Hotmail has been consistently reliable for me.
2. Many people on this forum have said that when they use XP (for instance another computer with XP, same hotmail account) the hotmail is fine.
3. My daughter has XP and has never experienced this problem with Hotmail.

It seems a pretty clear indication this is a Vista issue, not Hotmail. Hotmail has always been reliable for me. Vista has been nothing but problems for me in the 6 months I've used it. I can't tell you how many times programs shut down and send "error reports" on my computer..at least 6 times a day..no matter what program I'm using. Vista also has issues with my printer and I get error messages constantly, it doesn't like the Vista driver, which is the correct one according to HP. I have many friends who uninstalled Vista and went back to XP for all of these reasons. Another problem I've had is my 3 year old $600 Digital camera does not even support Vista..no drivers available. Now I must get a new camera? I realize that issue is not Vista's but the manufacturer of the camera, but it sure seems simpler to go back to XP or find another OS, rather than get a new camera, get a new printer and change an email address I've had for 13 years. Don't you agree?

My computer is 6 months old and has 3 gig of memory and still has issues with hotmail even if I disable anti-virus to humor the advice here. Why are people here sending these people on wild goose chases making them think its THEIR computers, anti-virus program, etc. causing the Hotmail problem, or being told Hotmail has problems, when this is not the case? If Vista could just be honest and say "we are having technical difficulties, which affect Hotmail, but we are working on the issue", then at least we would stop trying other fixes and wasting our time. How about some acknowledgement and responsibility for the problem. Maybe the Hotmail team is responsible for resolving the Hotmail conflict with Vista OS, but it still comes down to Vista being a problem.

I just spent another hour trying to read 4 emails...with 4 freezes. This forum has been talking about this problem for over 4 months now, clearly Vista tech support has not figured out the issue. I'm done. Vista is done rather.

Sorry if I sound rude, not trying to be, just extremely FRUSTRATED.

Oh btw..the first link above is no longer valid..no website exists there.

I am having the same problem with an HP DV3510nr, Vista Home Premium 64 bit I've had for one month. If you use IE 64 bit, the hotmail doesn't freeze. But Flash Player does not work on 64 bit and it is annoying to always be prompted to download flash player when I am on IE 64bit when surfing other sites. So I am always have to have two different versions of IE open.

I have windows vista home premium 64 bit running on an HP Pavillion DV9854 ca with core 2 duo 2.16 , 4 Gb Ram, 320 Gb Hd, its a new laptop with high end standards, I never faced any of the problems Iam facing now with my old 1Gb ram laptop running XP professional, the first problem I face now is that Incredimail (an outlook similar email program) stopped working, after searching endlessly on the net for solutions I came to understandign that the combination of vista 64bit + HP laptop+ incredimail doesn't work, so I had to buy a special software to transfer all my incredimail content into outlook, it turned out that outlook doesn;t support hotmail, so I turned into windows mail Live, just to find out that it keeps on freezing, and I am talking several minutes freeze, till i run ctrl+alt+del and manually stop the program, also all office 2003 programs seem frustratingly slow, if I try to save, print, or specially print on a network printer I have to wait for minutes, i only have norton antivirus running on the system, in addition to vista high performance power settings, can any one advice on how to evade these slow downs, I mean by compraison vista is ten times at least slower than XP professional, if it wasn't the hassle of getting all the drivers on XP version which so far cant find all of them and the HP installed boot option to run on Vista, I would have downgraded to XP. Vista seems so nice on features and cosmetics but I think they have serious compatability issues with the current available softwares.
thanks all
