Hi dishant and welcome to Vista forums!

Most of these apps are part of Vista itself, but just a question to start with: Why did you buy Ultimate if you do not want WMC for example?

ah, sorry :o

Well each one of the components you mentioned (WMediaCenter, WMediaPlayer, Movie Maker, Windows Contacts, Windows Calender, Photo Gallery, DVD Maker, Defender, Sidebar) are all integrated within Vista and provide functionality for core-components.

You definatly cant remove them without causing stability and security issues but you certainly can turn them off from within each program`s options ;)

The only way to remove these program is to use vlite and create your own personal vista. This program will let you select and deselect any software, services, components you want. This software is perfectly legal and Microsoft has no problem with it as long as you own a window license. That is because this software requires the "Automated Installation Kit (AIK)" which you must download from the microsoft website directly.

More on vlite here: vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool

One thing to keep in mind though, If you remove any of those components you mention above, some windows update will not install correctly. Microsoft states that on any vista running SP1 or planning to run SP1 will need ALL the windows components to be able to update successfully. There for disabling them is your best choice as dmex mentioned earlier. Microsoft also claims that SP2 will not require all these components to update. But I doubt SP2 will be out anytime soon.

Hi,
I hacked a lot of those out with vLite just to see if it could be done. I tried 3 or 4 different edited versions - it's pretty straightforward. Seems to be fine to take out stuff from the "components" section, but i would leave the "services" section alone. I removed around 5gb of programs and everything worked fine. You may find you miss some of the things you take out, though, so unless you're like me and don't mind reinstalling often you need to plan carefully before surgery.
