Solved Office Enterprise 2007 - new install fails

I have tried repeatedly (3 x) without success to complete install of MS Office Enterprise 2007 (from MS DVD media) to a brand new out of the box HP TouchSmart running Vista Home Premium SP1. I have loaded all recommended updates from Microsoft when first setting up the PC. I load the MS Office Ent 2007 DVD, enter my Product Key when prompted, and the installation starts as expected. After about 5 minutes, the status bar in the Installation Progress window is at 100% but nothing happens after that. A check of Task Manager shows the Setup process is stalled. Below is the error log. Any advice on next steps? Thanks.

I'd recommend you use a registry cleaner and delete all the install files before you try installing again. After that, just for fun, try defragmenting your hard drive. Then reinstall.

The registry cleaning and clearing the install files should help a bit. I'm not sure about the defragmenting, but I'm often a fan of trying to trick a computer into doing what it should.

Just in case you didn't, make sure you run the install with admin rights. With a big install like this one, it might be worthwhile to run in the "hidden" administrator's account (Cf. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67567-administrator-account.html).

Chances are you did, but this may be the point in the install when it tries to write all the registry keys it needs to run. These errors are woefully under-documented. Even people who work for MS think so (the guys at SysInternals, for example). If all else fails, you might try an install with process monitor running. It will slow things down a bit, no doubt, but you may be able to pinpoint the failure better that way.

Good luck.

Thank you both very much for your replies. I resolved the problem this evening with the help of MS Tech Support, which actually followed your suggestions. We checked the registry but could not find the expected install files. I went to Control Panel with the intent to uninstall any MS programs and start over, but received a message that I could not uninstall “until I completed the install that was already running”. This was perplexing because I did not see any active setup processes in Task Manager until I discovered msiexec.exe was running under the System account. Once I stopped this process, I was finally able to complete the install of Office 2007.

Thanks again for the help - I appreciate the suggestions.

I just bought a Windows 7 64 bit computer and for HOURS was trying to install Office Enterprise 2007. Just like above it runs, looks like it is 100% complete and then nothing. I went into Task Manager, Processes tab and deleted all the msiexec.exe (some had an *32 after it). IT INSTALLED.

Thank you.
