Removing HP Health Check

I just bought an HP Pavilion 64-bit with Vista Premium. Certain programs that use the Ctrl+Shift+C don't work right because thats the keystroke that HP Health Check opens up on. I want to get rid of it.

I have tried uninstalling it but I can't find it. I uninstalled HP Help and Support and it was still there (so I put it back).

Here is a picture of my Programs and Features list. What is the Health Check under?

Is there any options that can disable the hot keys. See if it shows up in this
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
No options to remove hotkeys. The windows installer thing found two entries. One Active assist (or something) for Health Check, the other was something else like that. I removed them both and will see how that works.

EDIT: Nope. HP Health Check is still there and the hotkey still doesn't work.

EDIT 2: The things I removed (or at least tried) were called:

Hewlett-Packard Active Check for Health Check
Hewlett-Packard Asset Agent for Health Check

I would try seeing what processes were running in the Task Manager's "Processes" tab.

My (limited) experience with HP has been that most of their software starts with "hp"

Write them down (or take a screen-shot), and start killing them one by one, and testing that key combination as you go. When you find the one that is responsible, search your hard disk for it and rename the file!! ;)

Also, the HP Help Center could be invoked by your keyboard software. This is especially true if you have a "special" keyboard with extra buttons and such.

If that is the case, go to Control Panel > Keyboard and check around for any special button controls and such. You might find it can be disabled there.

Well, the HP processes are (with the descriptions in parenthesies):

  • HPKBDAPP.exe (HP Quicktouch On Screen Display)
  • HpqSRmon.exe *32 (HpqSRmon)
  • hpswp_clipbook.exe *32 (HP Smart Web Printing add-on for Internet Explorer)
  • HPWAMain.exe *32 (HPWAMain Module)
  • hpwuSchd2.exe *32 (hpwuSchd2 Application)
  • QLBCTRL.exe *32 (Quick Launch Buttons) [My Laptop has touch buttons that do different stuff. That is what these are]
  • QPService.exe *32 (HP QuickPlay Resident Program)
and when I use the hot keys to open the health care:
  • HPHC.exe (HP Health Check)
thats everything in task manager. None of them seem like they would do it. i don't know. As far as the keyboard settings go, I didn't find anything relating to hotkeys in the keyboard thing.

Did you actually try to kill any of those processes?

The "QLBCTRL.exe" especially stands out to me, though another of those could easily be responsible. They'll come back when you reboot - so if killing a process hoses your system, just reboot and remember not to touch that process again.

My Computer

I tried stopping all of those processes, nothing worked.

Then I found this site: HP | corey gilmore's blog, and I followed the instructions on it, which removed HPHC.
But now, when I do ctrl + shift + c, windows just says it cant find hphc.

Do you have a HP Health Check shortcut, either on your desktop or in the start menu?

If so, check the properties on that file. Does it have CTRL + SHIFT + C configured as a shortcut key? If so, remove that.

After that point, you should be able to safely restore the HP Health Check to its previous condition, and use CTRL + SHIFT + C without it popping up.

That was it. There was a shortcut leftover from the installation and sure enough, there it was. So I deleted the shortcut, and now Windows doesn't get pissed, and the other program that uses Ctrl + Shift +C works now.

I think I will put HPHC back. Now that I know how to get rid of that, I won't be bothered by it. I think it actually does have some practical use.

Thank You So Much!

I had the same problem instead of removing the program just either change or remove the shortcut key...basically place an Icon for HP Health on your desktop, right click on it and go to properties, there you will see the short-cut key, I just deleted it but just click and either change or delete it...hope this helps it helped me with my programs

Hi, thanks a lot for this thread. I bumped into this problem, had no clue how to fix it. I tried searching in the "Settings" menu, it doesn't refear to a lot of options, not to mention hotkeys. But after googling a bit, i found youre posts....extremly helpfull, saved me a lot ofheadache. So, thanks a lot!!!!!!!
Cheers!

There is an easier way. Just find the program (HPHC.exe). In Vista just press Windows Start, start typing "hp health check," right-click on it in the list and select Properties, and delete the Hot-Key combo so it says "None." Hit OK and you are good to go.

HP Health Care is already configured for automatic scans once a week. If you want to run it again, in Vista do the above steps except right-clicking on it. Instead, left-click on it or hit Enter if highlighted. Or invoke it from running HP Total Care Advisor.
