UAC Replacement?

Hi All,

With all the discussion around the forum about the pros and cons of vista's UAC, the news of a better alternative, when it arrived in my inbox today, (from Technibble), looked to be a perfect answer.

However a look around the web found this information on the package, (Smart UAC Replacement), found this warning about the developers of the package.

The package looks like a perfect answer to some of my annoyances with UAC and is available / recommended on sites I would normally class as trusted, so wanted to ask if anybody has any further information or comments.

Re: UAC Replacement?

I agree this looks sooo good, but, do we trust the provider? I don't think I will be the first one to try it out.

Re: UAC Replacement?

STEER WELL CLEAR. This feature of Vista, UAC, is tightly integrated into the OS Kernal and as such can grant/deny access to system resources. It controls such things as the installation of programs, modifying certain areas of the registry and other important routines. This is to prevent the casual user from deliberately accessing these things without intention. A replacement like this, whilst it may appear to operate correctly, could also be granting unwanted access to certain parts of your system behind your back. In other words, it could be behaving like a Trojan. I recommend that you keep the UAC provided by Microsoft and to check the Microsoft website for any information about alternatives

Re: UAC Replacement?

I too would recommend against replacing the built in UAC with a program that is produced by a company who has other programs flagged as evilware. It would be too easy for the company to program in permissions which bypass normal UAC operation.

Re: UAC Replacement?

Dwarf, I agree with you totally, my main reason for the original post was as a warning to others of the company behind a seemingly useful and well presented tool. Interestingly the original Technibble blog post has been removed. so maybe they did some further research too.

Re: UAC Replacement?

Thanks for the warnings. I have noted the consistent theme in these forums of NOT disabling UAC and the advice removes any temptation that might linger.
