winrar/vista issue

Hi,

Winrar gives me "access is denied" when i try to export .dll files.

I have already disables UAC,
am running as administrator.

Specifically,
If i try to export any folder to desktop, etc, winrar exports everything including subfolders and other files except dll files. Then gives the "access is denied" message.

I have tried different rar files, all with the same issue.

Futhermore, if i use winzip to extract, i get the "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permission to access the item"

I m try to extract some visual themes, etc.
Also winrar exports iso files and everything else without any problem.

I tried to take ownership of the windows32 folder by right-clicking and selecting. But still the same issue.

Please help.

Regards, EDIT - BTW. I CANT EVEN OPEN/EXECUTE/EXPORT .EXE FILES. AHHH.........

Hi, dsx9, and welcome to the forums.

You have a permissions issue. It sounds like you have been doing things a little bit backwards. It sounds like you have UAC disabled because you think it is an annoyance (it actually helps prevent most types of malware infections as long as you have it enabled) and that you have taken ownership of folders because you think you should be able to read and write to any folder at any time. That is simply not so.

I have taken ownership of nothing on my system, and have UAC in place - and I test software a lot - and yet I have no issues using WinRAR to extract any file to any non protected folder (IOW- anything not under C:\Windows, and C:\Program Files\ and C:\Program Files (X86)\).

I would honestly suggest starting from scratch, but if that is not an option, try performing http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html and see if that can help resolve some of your issues.

Are you trying to export directly from winrar into c:\windows\system32? If so, the message saying you don't have permission is not about getting the dll file out of the rar archive, it's about overwriting the dll in system32 which it replaces.

I suggest you do it one step at a time:
First extract all files from the rar into a normal folder outside of any system folders. Important: Make a backup copy of any files in system32 which you are going to replace (some people have had problems with patched theme dlls and have to copy the original Microsoft dlls back into system32). Then instead of taking ownership of the whole system32 folder, just take ownership of the individual files you intend to replace. Then you can copy your new patched versions of the dlls into system32.

Like johngalt wrote, you really don't need to turn off UAC, just increase your priviledges for a particular job when required. Here's a good trick to avoid seeing so many UAC prompts when doing a job like this:
Right-click a shortcut to Windows Explorer on the desktop or start menu and click "Run as Administrator". Then everything you do in Explorer has elevated permissions already and you don't have to give permission for every action. Also every program you start from that Explorer window (by double clicking an exe file) will inherit the elevated permissions.
