When Dreamscape is running, Vista will periodically hard hang (will not respond to any input except hardware reset).

On reboot all desktop dispay setting are trashed.

Vista is UFAPP
(Useless For Any Practical Purpose)

Not really, vista really likes lots of hardware, once it has that it runs nicely. Can you give us a list of your hardware please, in particular what graphics card you use.

Booted Vista, turned on Dreamscape, after a few minutes Vista hung.

Restarted in Safe mode, received message that "Dreamscape has been disabled because explorer unexpectedly shut down..."

Restarted normally, checked Event Viewer for all events prior to Safe Boot restart and found no error events. I am in no way qualified to interpret any events that are not glaring errors.

During reboot the event viewer reports this error:
Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-EventSystem

Description:
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\vistasp1_gdr\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

There seems to be quite a bit of internet bug chatter about eventsystemobj.cpp, and system hangs, but I found nothing useful. The error asks you to contact Microsoft Product Support Services, but the only contacts I found require you to pay. The only time I ever called MS for Vista support, they told me my allotted "free" time had already been used, so I'm not exactly inclined to deal them, or spend more money after the hundreds of dollars and many hours of time trying to get a stable Vista running.

I checked nvidia and found a newer driver than the one I recently installed (178.13 WHQL released 25-SEP-08 installed on 05-OCT-08).

178.24_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql

I have installed it and been doing things on Vista, and so far after a few hours running Dreamscape it seems to work.

May have to cancel the UFAPP.

I've been having video issues too. Re-installed Vista several times and tried several graphics drivers but computer keeps locking up when I play a video. I also have sli 8800gtx's and if I turn off Vista's Aero theme then video plays fine, same if i turn off SLI and drop to single GPU the video plays fine. Before the re-install of Vista I was running Vista and sli 8800gtx's fine without issues but since the new install I can't get it running stable. I have the same hardware and the same software as before, the only reason I re-installed was because things were slowing down due to the fact that Vista x64 was my test rig and I was dual booting with XP, but i like Vista 64 so much that I dumped XP and took back some hard drive space.

Maybe the next Nvidia driver release will fix things, I'm on 178.24 and i've tried 178.15, 178.13 and 177.92.

Again, at least rectify it to Dreamscene / Deskscape is UFAPP....

Bagging a whole OS because one app is buggy...logic like that sounds like it's UFAPP :) :p

I hope it stays stable for you :)

nvidia has released beta driver 180.42 today and I have downloaded it hoping to fix Phsyx which was hanging and causing BSOD's on Vista. You might try that.

Also if you are careful you can remove old drivers, but disconnect from the internet and reboot into Safe mode or Vista might reinstall nvidia drivers. 3DGuru forum might be helpful. If you are using nvidia nForce, careful not to uninstall those drivers. If might be helpful to disable antivirus while installing or downloading. Good Luck.

Well I can say it was more stable, it did hang once this morning shortly after first boot. Yesterday it turned in over six hours of use without without a hitch. A lot of that time was behind another application's full-screen mode, and Dreamscape is supposed to shutdown when that happens. ( I tried to peek but I'm not fast enough:rolleyes:)

Because of other problems—mostly—I have downloaded the new 180.42 beta release today and am trying it. This time I took the extra step of cleaning out previous nvidia Display drivers, &c.

I know different people have often strong opinions about OSs &c., and I don't wish to heat up this forum, but realistically for me Vista is only a diversion or toy, while to others it well could be probably much more.

I work mainly in Unix/Linux systems (which only recently has had a decent desktop) where Windows boxes are mostly clients—and the speed and reliability of XP more than meets my needs. I use Vista for eye candy, exploration, assisting friends who use Vista, and entertainment (DX10, SLI…) — which is why Dreamscape is important — and it's fine for that. I do really like the waterfall, though I was worried a little at first about humidity with computer hardware, but then it turned out to be unfounded.;)

I find Vista's maintainance requirements extremely high even for a new OS. Even now as I type this post (IE8) I find that the mouse cannot be used to position the cursor in the text box, and I have to resort to keyboard commands.

My viewpoint may be also affected (or twisted) by over forty years  of working with computers.

I do not miss card punches and teletype terminals.

Personally, Vista to me is just another OS. Just like the next will be and the one after that... hell, I've got three OS'es on this PC alone ;) Diehard fans of one particular OS are just doing themselves a disservice.

The requirements may initially seem high, but then when 3.11, W95, XP came out, there was a lot of rumbling about requirements. Even when card systems were fazed out....:p Unfortunately that's the price of progress:rolleyes:

As for the dreamscene, I had exactly the same issues when I first tried it. It worked. Then it didn't. Upgraded drivers, worked then stopped rinse repeat. The DWM wasn't triggering properly when in fullscreen etc I hate to say it, but it's unlikely that new driver releases will fix the problem. I'd like to be wrong though.

For me Dreamscene worked perfectly, as long as I DIDN'T USE the computer :D
