Help with copying

My harddrive had to be replaced. The Geek Squad did it. I paid $99. for them to copy all my data.

The disk they gave me contains all my Internet favorites. When I click on them they say they are invalid. Any way to get these to work?

Also they copied my Windows mail contacts... how do I get these into the mail program.

What a job this is, getting things back to normal.

Re: Help with copying

$99 seems rather a lot for a simple process.

For this Im going to assume your using Internet Explorer and Windows Mail since you didnt specify what you were using.

Favorites:

1. Open IE
2. press alt button to get the menu down and goto Filemenu and then Import and Export
3. In the screen that appears select Import from a file and then click next
4. In this screen select favorites and next
5. Now navigate to where your favorites file is stored on your backup and then click next
6. IE will now import the favorites and they should appear in your list of favorites

Windows Mail:

1. Open Windows Mail
2. Click on File menu then go to Import - Windows Contacts
3. You now have several file formats to choose from. Have a look on the backup to see what format they are and then choose the one from the list
4. Windows Mail will now ask for the location of the file, so browse to it, select it then click next and it should start importing the contacts.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help with copying

Thankl you. Favorites worked... but somehow I lost the contacts... it is so hard redoing everything. I had everything just the way I wanted it and then the hard drive went. Luckily it was still on warranty. Not only was $99 outrageous they wouldn't work on the computer until I paid it. Now I'm trying to work with the stuff they copied and 1/2 of it doesn't even work!

I remember having my computer so there was a double screen and I could just highlight something and a window would pop up with options like copy to and you picked a folder. That is gone! The Administrator crap is back too. This is my last HP computer.

Re: Help with copying

how did they back up the contacts? As one file or a folder of files?

Re: Help with copying

One folder and when I opened it all the contacts were there. I was confused when I was trying to copy to my new harddrive and actually was putting it back where it came from... then today it was just gone.

Re: Help with copying

I don't recall...

None of the favorites work either. Either I'm doing something wrong or they did.

Re: Help with copying

I thought you had success with the favorites? Try copying the files in contacts folder on backup to c:\users\<account name>\contacts

Re: Help with copying

By success I meant that they went in... but when I tried to use one nothing happened. What a shame because I have years of genealogy links. I'll try what you suggested when I get home. I'm at work now. I'll let you know.
