Getting program to run at startup

Florio

Member
I know that this topic has been discussed frequently in the past, but the problem I'm experiencing is slightly different to those expressed elsewhere on the forum.
I have CCleaner installed on my laptop and want it to run automatically at startup, without the customary UAC. When I go to Software Explorer (Windows Defender), I can see CCleaner listed, but it is 'not yet classified', and the ENABLE button is greyed out, even when 'Show for all users' has been activated.
How can I get CCleaner to run at startup without the UAC?

Hi florio,

have you tried creating a shortcut for the program, setting it to "run as administrator" in the compatibility tab and adding that to the start-up folder.

another option would be to create a task in the task scheduler to do what you want. this can be set to run on every boot or every log-on as you need.

In addition to Nigel's suggestion, you could try going to C: \program files x86\ccleaner

Right click the ccleaner .exe, select Properties>Compatibility , then tick the Run as Administrator box and OK.

Hope it helps

In the left pane of the "Group Policy Object editor" window, in the "Computer configuration" section, expand "Administrative Templates". Expand the System object, click the Logon object, and then in the right-pane, double-click "Run these programs at user logon". In the "Run these programs at user logon Properties" box, click Enabled, and then click Show. In the "Show Contents" box, click Add. Add the path to CCleaner, C:\Program Files (x86)\CCleaner (may be different on yours?)

Hello Florio, and welcome to Vista Forums.

To have a program that requires elevation to run at startup without UAC, you will need to create a task in Task Scheduler to run CCleaner at startup instead. Option one (Method Two) in this tutorial will help show you how to do this if needed.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Last night I created a task in Task Scheduler, but this morning when I started up my laptop, the usual UAC came up (I always run programs as the Administrator).
I'll try Fumz's advice, but am not optimistic... (also because my version of Windows is in Italian, and the command names are not always translated well!!):o

Did you also remove CCleaner from the normal startup program list after creating the task?

Brink, I've just tried to remove CCleaner from the startup program list by going through regedit, but the program is not actually included!! Don't quite understand what's happening here. CCleaner definitely TRIES to run on startup, but I have to respond to the UAC.

Hey Florio

When you set up the task scheduler, On the General Tab where you give in the task name you have to put a tick in the box to run with the highest privileges

hope this helps

Have you tried,

Start, type msconfig press enter under the start up programs tab
If it is here just remove the tick.

or

Start, all programs, startup
just remove it if it is in this folder

Ccleaner can be start up disabled by going into Options and Settings and unchecking the "Run Ccleaner when computer starts" box

Using a programs own options to disable it at start up is always preferable to using msconfig, registry editing or anything else.

(this is supposed to happen)

Hi Florio,
We seem to be getting a bit confused here,
So I will try again, Starting CCleaner on system start using the start up option within CCleaner works but will always require you to answer a UAC prompt.

There is a way around this by using the task scheduler to do this you first need to stop CCleaner from starting by any other method for example by removing the tick in the start up options. Otherwise this program will be trying to start up twice!!

To use the task scheduler you need to carefully follow the next instructions. I realise that you have added difficulties as you have to translate everything so I have tried to make this as simple as possible. :)

1. Cick on Start Orb,
2. right click computer,
3. click manage, accept the uac prompt
4. click on the left hand pane, task scheduler,
5. click on the right hand pane, create task
6. under the General tab (the first tab)
7. Give your task a name (CCleaner) and put a tick in the box run with highest privileges
8. under the Triggers tab (the second tab)
9. click on New
10. Select Begin the task At log on
11. under the Actions tab (The third tab)
12. click on New
13. click on Browse find and highlight the ccleaner.exe click on Open and then ok
14. click on ok
thats it you are finished

CCleaner will now start with windows without the UAC prompt, but it will always start open on your desktop as there is no option to start CCleaner minimised !!

Thanks Jim R,
I had actually already created the startup task with Task Manager. I went back there now to check and found, in the central panel under Chronology (or whatever it's called in English -- I have the Italian version of Vista) that the program begins to run on startup but is then unsuccessful (there are various correlation IDs that I can let you have if they can be of use). My only guess, at this point, is that I may have selected an incorrect option when setting up the task (although I did tick the box "run with highest privileges"). Should I have clicked on "run independently of user login" (or whatever it says in English)? BTW, how can you modify the settings of a task once you've defined it?

1. Post the correlation ID's I cant hep you there but maybe someone else
2. No there should be no need to tick "run only when user is logged on"
3. Open task scheduler, click on task scheduler library, highlight task in middle pane, select properties in right pane

Start>Right click Computer>Manage to get to Task Scheduler
Doubleclick Task Scheduler and Task Scheduler Library will appear under Task Scheduler

Your Task you created will show on the list of tasks. Just double click the task on the list that you created to open it and then edit the task as you like.

More information that you don't really need to know, but will help you understand what goes on:

If you used Ccleaner's Options>Settings to clear the "Run Ccleaner when windows starts" box, then the MSCONFIG startup box should not even have Ccleaner on the list there.

MSCONFIG is meant to be used as a tool to TEMPORARILY disable startup items for troubleshooting purposes. It is not meant as a tool to permanently disable startup items. This tends to clutter the registry since unchecking an item actually makes another "disabled" entry elsewhere in the registry. This is why disabling a program using it's own options is a better way to do this as it automatically removes the startup entry in the registry without creating another one.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
Just to give you an update on the situation:
a) I have disactivated the "run Ccleaner when windows starts" box in the Options/Settings menu of CCleaner
b) there is no longer a CCleaner entry in the MSCONFIG list of startup programs
c) even though I have created a task with TASK MANAGER, CCleaner will not run on startup. The reasons for this have varied. First, there was an "unknown username or invalid password (0x8007052E)". After editing the task, I was informed that "the user has not logged onto the network. The specified service does not exist (0x800704DD)". The latest message is "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request (0x8007051F)."
It would seem that CCleaner (don't know why!) has to have an internet connection to run on startup, and that the program is being programed to run before the connection is established.
One thing I forgot to mention earlier; I previously had Comodo firewall on my laptop, and CCleaner always ran on startup without any problems, and without the GUI opening on the desktop.

Florio,

CCleaner may be checking for an update when it is trying to access the internet. In CCleaner Options and Settings, uncheck the Automatically check for update... option to see if that helps.

Hi Florio,

Its annoying to be so close and not have any more ideas, you have said yourself that it may be possible that you may have made a mistake setting this up, so I think it may be worth a try to delete this task; Open task scheduler, click on task scheduler library, highlight task in middle pane, select delete in right pane and then to try setting it up again trying to follow the guide as carefully as you can.

It may be possible that the deinstallation of Comodo is stopping this working, I can only suggest checking to make sure that it is completely gone a good registry cleaner may help here
