SuperFetch has stopped working.

I understand what SuperFetch does. It monitors automatic updates, and processes and sends them to a lower priority queue in order to make your processes and work run faster (if I am not mistaken).

My SuperFetch crashes when I update McAfee, or other programs. This then crashes my svchost.exe.

I am on a Dell XPS 630i. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz, 3.00 GM of RAM, 32-bit Operating System with dual nVidia GeForce 9800 GTs running Windows Vista(TM) Home Premium.

In fact.. this is the second computer I have recieved from Dell. The first (exact same) was crashing under a stop code of 0X0000001A and having issues with the svchost.exe. I exchanged it, and this computer aswell is having similar issues (although not many unexpected crashes).

This computer has only crashed for explained reasons (graphic drivers out of date, etc.) All reasons have been fixed, and haven't had a crash since.

If there is any logical explanation for why this is happening, i'd love to get an opinion from a software-savvy person out there because I know little to nothing about computers to be completely honest.

Hi Msibley,

That is not what Superfetch does, it monitors what applications you use most and loads them into memory for quicker access. These tutorials might be of interest to you.

You might also want to check your event viewer and problem reports and solutions center for more info on your problems. You can also run a system health report as well. Post back. :)

Thanks for correcting me. I appreciate you taking the time. Mind my lack of computer knowledge, I really am trying to learn.

I don't think a system health report will show me what's happening.. as I said. This computer is less than a week old..

I've looked at the problem reports, and it doesn't tell me anything more than "Report Sent" or "There are no solutions".

As I said before, this issue was with both the XPS I returned to Dell, and this one. The odds of it being a hardware error are slim to none. But I can't seem to find a software error. The only thing I can think of is to disable SuperFetch for the time being to keep my svchost.exe working.

While I have you here, aswell.. mind explaining exactly what svchost.exe does aswell?

Again, Thanks
-Matthew

Have you tried using process explorer to maybe see exactly what is crashing? Svchost is a host for different processes. A lot of different processes will have svchost. You'll have to try to find exactly what service exactly is crashing.

And how do you go about doing that? As this is getting old with Vista. The funny thing is, is that it started awhile back and it has been snowballing eversince. And from what I have observed nobody really has any difinitive answers.
