I can't let you do that, Dave.

(Forgive me if this is the wrong section, but I don't see where else I could post this.)

I'll get right to the problem: Vista won't let me change what a file (.psd, .gif, .iso, etc) opens with except for the options it already provides.
(Right click an item -> Properties -> Change)
I press "Browse" and select an exe such as Photoshop, but it doesn't get added to the list below or anywhere in that window, making it impossible to change what it opens with. I took screen shots on the off chance no one understands what I'm talking about:

It's gotten to the point where I can't open files like .VEG because I can't associate Sony Vegas with it.

Have you tried changing it from Default Programs in the start menu or control panel? Start Menu-Default Programs-Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

Hi,

Open regedit and navigate to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\
{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}

Or just paste the bracketed bit into Edit>Find.

Click on the MayChangeDefaultMenu and make sure the default is not set. If it is, right click it in the right pane, Modify, clear the value box, and OK.

Hope it helps

and before you do that, make sure you backup the registry before attempting to change keys.
