Hi folks, Help needed. After performing a "Disc Check" I find that my 2 DVD/Cd ROM drives have stopped working. Device manager in control panel shows the following.
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19)"

Situation causing me much grief any ideas ?

Hi callmevictoria, try uninstall and reinstall the two physical optical drives.

First, shutdown and unplug the drives then power up unit. Go to Device Manager under Administrative Tools to make sure the two drives are not there. If they are there delete them.

Next, shutdown and plug the drives back and power up. I hope you will see them back working again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bruce, Sorry for the delay replying: work. Followed your advice, uninstalled devices, powered down, disconnected both drives, powered back up, checked Device Manager neither drive showing. Powered down again, re-connected drives, power back on. Still same situation and message in device driver.

But, on the advice of a guy at work. Started in Safe Mode did system restore and all came back again. So am now back to normal (dont know why, but).

callmevictoria, glad you got them back. Restoration is a very powerful repair tool for vista. I would try that first before try anything else for every problem arrived. lol

Cheers and enjoy!

Thanks for your suggestion SIW2, See my reply to Bruce, have corrected problem by use of Safe Mode and System Restore. I had a look at the registry edit option. Found all the program links and filters. They had slight differences to the XP procedure. When I got to delete I was issued with some "Bloodcurdling threats" of the outcome should I chose to delete, so I chose not too. Although do I have to delete now I have the ROM drives working? or are these possible registry faults to blame for my Internet Explorer continually failing to respond ?

Any ideas Alan

Hi,

Third party burning apps. like to add those Filters, which can sometimes cause the dvd problems you had.

You always get those warnings about deleting/changing registry entries.

If you have sorted it out with System restore, shouldn't need to edit the registry.

Your IE issues will probably be something else.

Suggest you start a new thread about that.

Hope it helps
