It's hard to train yourself to do this, but I recommend not opening it for editing directly from the mail program. Instead, save it
, specifying a place that's logical to you to do so. Then, open it for editing from that location. When you are ready, attach that edited version to your reply E-mail. You will always have an edited copy in a location you know and prefer.
It is even better if you append a modifier (such as the edited date or "Rev B", for example) to the file name when saving it after editing. So "Document.doc" would become "Document--2009-07-18.doc", for example. That way, you will have the original version plus the edited one. Only working on the edited one keeps the original "original"!
