Live mail smtp problem.

I checked the other threads and didn't find one that addressed this problem.

I bought a laptop with windows Vista on it last August and shortly there after I installed SP1. After a few bumps and bruises I got it working adequately. I used the Windows Live email client as my pop3 server and it has worked fine until... 2 nights ago I installed SP2 RC (release candidate) and now my pop3 accounts though they can still receive cannot be sent from. However my live.com (not POP3) account can still both send and receive. I have since uninstalled SP2 and reinstalled windows live mail client, but the problem remains.
I left some pop3 accounts on another client (Mozilla's Thunderbird) and they exhibit the same problem.
Also the first time I start windows live after a reboot, if I've an outstanding mail to be sent in the outbox, I get a message from Shield Deluxe (anti-virus software) saying that a connection can not be made to 65.254.254.34 and telling me to make sure my fire wall allows avp.exe. I searched for avp.exe on my C: drive, but it wasn't found. I also shut off the firewall and Shield Deluxe entirely and it didn't help. I have no idea why there is a reference to a Kaspersky exe, I'm just using the Vista fire wall.
I've attached screen shots of the messages form each of those programs.
Anybody have any ideas on this?
Thanks,
Steve. <== Sometimes regrets accepting Vista as OS
