Burned Dvd wont play in home playr, converting avi to dvd help

I recently downloaded cucusoft avi to dvd converter pro v 7 recommended from a friend who uses it on her vista machine. It is an all in one and converts avi to dvd. the Dvd's she burns play no problem on my home player, however I have tried and my dvds will not play. I have used her memorex disks as well as I have some tdk's neither worked and my disks don't work on her player. I contacted cucusoft they said to uninstall the software and the cole2k codec I was using and restart, reinstall cucusoft and then download the xvid codec and the vista codec pack. Still didn't work. Uninstalled everything again, this time I installed cucusoft and k lite full codec ... still doesn't work. Do I need to do something to the codec once its on my machine? Is it my burner? I bought my hp dv7 1153ca laptop in jan 09 with the vista home pre 64. I am so frustrated I am considering taking it back I have 2 more weeks to decide. Why wont the sftw work on my machine? Should I get a different avi to dvd converter am I missing a codec, is it Vista itself it just makes no sense my system is obviously missing something but what. Do I need to turn something off, is software that came on my machine causing issues with the burn? how can I test my dvd burner to see if it is working otherwise. A million questions I know but I am so frustrated now I just found this forum and am hoping one of the guru's here can help!

As well, the dvd burned will play in my player via windows media or quick time as well when I go to the converter output folder I can view the movie there so it does seem to convert properly.

My advice would be to uninstall all codecs conversion and burning software. Install Vista codec pack. Install Imgburn for burning DVDs. Install CDBurnerXP for burning CDs. The best freeware I've found for avi=>dvd are DVD Flick and FAVC. All this software is free.

Also each PC burner can be finicky. There is not one "best" blank media. You have to try several brands of blank DVD media to see what works in your burner. Then download DVDInfoPro and find out who makes it(factories churn out DVD blanks under other labels) Once you find out which blank works best in your PC you can buy online by the spindle to save money.

Thanks, I will try this. When you say uninstall all burning software there is all the software my system came with I don't use nor really know what it does like windows dvd maker and cyberlink dvd suite are these ok to be left as is? cheers K

Nope. Esp. Cyberlink if you run Imgburn and try to select "lock the drive" option, it will tell you another application already has control of the drive. I think you need to go into the Features removal to get rid of Cyberlink. I know on my system I thought it was gone but Imgburn still wouldn't lock the drive. Using a tool that showed running processes and services I saw Cyberlink was still there. You have to get rid of all of it. It may also be a good idea to turn off AutoPlay, AutoStart and all that for optical drives. Some systems it interferes, some not, so I think it's trial and error on that setting.

Could cyberlink be the cause of the original problem with using cucusoft avi to dvd creator pro as to why the dvd's were not burning correctly? cheers K

I don't really know. I don't know that much about Cyberlink to say if it's good or bad. The first PC I bought that came with a CD burner, the max burn speed was only 4x and I used the software that came free with the PC. Then I bought a burner with 50x burn speed and moved to Nero. After awhile, although Nero burned fine, I found I wanted to use "lightweight" processes for conversion and burning. An "all in one" suite of software can be a good way to get started but I've found that as you get more experienced you want to use a bunch of small tools. Some work better with different types of input files, so one isn't necessarily "better" than the other. If I can get a good result with FAVC I try to use it because it's fun to watch 4 copies of the video encoder run on my quad core. But for some things DVD Flick is better. Going the other way, DVD => avi, I find AutoGK is easy to use and gives pretty good results with a single pass in most situations.

Depends how much of a stickler you are for quality vs. runtime etc..

But now we have a lot of choices even among free tools, and many of the good pay software the cost is < $50 and with cheap computing power and storage, it's a good time to mess around with media. :)

(Hmmmmmmmmmm I rambled... sorry) :)

You can also try winavi 9.0, to convert avi to dvd. Works gud.

PS: Make sure that u use the batch convert, otherwise it may give some error.

DVD players use .vob, and Video TS and audio TS files. you need to convert from .avi to .vob. You also need to make sure your Home dvd can support the disk you burned to. Some cannot read DVD-RW disks. You need to also make sure the region encoding is for the region your standalone DVD player supports.

This is what I use:Format Factory - Free media file format converter

I have used this to convert .avi to a vista friendly .wmv ( for streaming from MCE to Xbox 360), and I use Powerdvd 8 ultra to play the .vob dvd files I pulled off my Wedding DVD. Ultimate has playback codecs, whilst premium requires codec packs or 3rd party playback software.

Thanks Miles, I finally was able to burn a dvd readable my my home player. I uninstalled all software/codecs including the cyberlink. I then downloaded what you suggested, burnt the dvd and thank you Miles it worked! I have since tried to uninstall cyberlink from my laptop now but it says I dont have permission. I tried to change my permissions and it still wouldn't let me ... any suggestions. FYI I have 2 new systems HP touchsmart vista 64 bit machine I tried your suggestions on first, and I have an hp laptop vista 64. If I can uninstall the cyberlink I am going to try cucusoft one more time since I do own a legit copy of it. Thanks again, cheers K

This is caused by user corruption. A work around is to disable UAC, uninstall Cyberlink, then re-enable UAC.

I tried to change the UAC but when I went back and tried to uninstall the cyberlink on the laptop it still said I was not the administrator. The touchsmart worked wonderfully I was able to change the UAC and uninstall the cyberlink. Thanks for all the help. Cheers K :D
