Norton Ghost vs Ultimate Backup

I have Norton Ghost 14 and Vista 64 Ultimate.

I don't see any reason to use Ghost over Windows Backup.

Both take about 2 hours to backup my hard drive.

Am I wrong?

Thanks,
Bill

Use vista complete pc backup and restore image as it is integrated into the o/s, and the image can be updated

Bill,

You are right. These two software were created to do the same thing....to make the recovery
backup of the date and/or entire hard drive along with operating system. It's up to you which
one you prefer. So they do thir job 100%. They are both recommended.

I prefer the backup application on the bootable CD. So I can boot computer from such CD and
do the backup when the Windows is not running. I don't trust any cloning software that performs
backup while the operating system is working at the same time. However that's purely my
personal opinion.

Cheers...

I guess you can't do this with Vista CD. This CD has very limited recovery options.

I personally use application called Spotmau Power Suite 2008 most the time. I have the 2009 edition , but I don't like it at all and still prefer the first one. With this CD I can do almost anything, it's really helpful suite. You can find that app here Spotmau PowerSuite Professional 2008 - Boot Up Any Computer, Fix & Install Windows Easily!
check it out.

The 2009 suite is here Spotmau PowerSuite 2009 - Never been so easy to fix your computer

Martee - I agree with the bootable CD option. Can I do that with my Vista Ult CD? If not, what software are you using?
Thanks

To restore a PC recovery image

Insert the Vista DVD, or boot into recovery, select Windows Complete PC restore.
If the image is on disk, you place the last disk of the image in first, then you place the First image disk in when prompted to do so.

Rive,

You are right, the Vista CD has option to restore the windows from the backup that was created already. I didn't find the option to create such backup from this CD. You still have to do the backup when the OS is running. Right?

Well, maybe I'm wrong, I dont know

Yikes - one day to buy at $49 ;)

I'll bet backup is faster outside the OS.

Bill,

You are right, it expensive, but it's really good investment. How fast it is...I can make the clone of my drive in about 45 minutes -3 hours, it depends how much I have data on the drive. But I can restore the drive in about 15 - 40 minutes from the backup.

There are freeware such Clonezilla Live download
however I never use it and can't tell how good it is. I think it is the bootable Cd too. You can always try.

Cheers...

I have used the PC backup in Vista to restore after I bought two new 320GB 7200rpm HDD's and configured them in a RAID 0. My system was back up, and running as an exact mirror image in 20min.
The backup process is automated, but it is best to backup the image to an external HDD

Rive,

Yep, you are positive. I have the same disk setup with four partitions. The system partition is 50GB big so I can restore that partition exactly how it was, in 12 minutes. It is really fast. I do remember the pain when the OS broke on me and I have to install and setup everything from the beginning. It took almost two whole days to do that exactly how I wanted. :(

Since I have the clean image of my operating system with all applications and setup it is easy to restore os in minutes, not days. :)

Cheers...
