Spybot Search & Destroy

Hi,
Can someone please tell me if Spybot Search & Destroy, is worth installing?
Does it chew up system resources?
If not, what else is there out there that is free, and doesn't hog the system.

Regards
Rip

Re: Spybot Search & Destroy

Hi Riptorn, Spybot is a great freeware anti spyware tool. I m using it and it works great. The only bug are:
1. One of its process Tea-Timer.exe takes more memory and thus can make other apps run slow(sometimes).
2. It integrates itself into IE and may make your browser slow.
3. For every system changes and registry changes, it gives annoying pop ups and asks for permission(Allow or Deny).

But its worth installing if you are concerned about the system security as it provides tight security.

Alternative: Malware Bytes Antimalware.

Hope that helps,
Dinesh.

Re: Spybot Search & Destroy

Hi Riptorn, i have used spybot for a long time on both my machines. I do not use its tea timer (resident protection) I only use resident SD helper (browser protection). which i value as it has blocked me from a couple of links to blacklisted websites. I have no probs with it slowing down my browsers not even IE8, but some people have apparently this is a result of storing large amounts of cookies. otherwise i update once a week (updates are released every wednesday) reimmunise and run a manual scan on that day.
I to would recommend Malwarebytes free stand alone scanner as an essential tool (you would be amazed at what it can find)
As far as Resident scanners i find Avast & Defender lightwieght and sufficient, and then maybee once a week i do a manual scan with spybot and malwarebytes.
Just so you know if you are running Kaspersky it will not allow you to use spybot. I hope this is of some help in making a decision, all the best
