Coloring the cells and text in Excel 7

I have Excel 7 along with Vista. I am having problems in coloring the cells as well as coloring the text in the cell. It was so easy in previous versions of excel. I never had any trouble with this simple function.

Cell/Row Highlight:
But in 7, I don't know what'g wrong when I select the whole row and click on the format color, on selecting any color for the row or cell, it never gets highlighted.
Why this is happening ?

Text Hilight:
When I highlight text in any cell and apply color to it, the hilight color only appears when I click on the text. As get out of the text from that cell, the text goes back to normal color. Why this is happening ?

I am not sure whether I need to change any settings for 7 to do this.. I looked at the help. It simply says select the cells or rows and simply selects the desired color from the Format menu..

I am not sure why microsoft makes things so complicated.. In the older versions, in tools and options, quite a few useful options are there to checks all these settings.. this version is so cumbersome..
Any help please ..???

Thank you for the link. This is a very useful resource for all the MS office products though it didn't help in my particular case. The tutorial showing the same what I have been doing it since the day 1. It seems there must be some setting that is overriding my color settings..
