Solved Trying to install Office 2003

I'm trying to install Office 2003 as a precursor to installing an upgrade version of Office 2007. I previously installed it on another computer (now defunct) running XP Pro, and I had no trouble with it, but Vista Home Premium tells me I don't have the necessary permission to alter the registry. I have logged in as Administrator (at least I think I have) but I still run up against this brick wall. Looking at User Accounts in Control Panel, there is only one account - Administrator. Is there anything else I need to do to get complete access? It seems to me that Vista is trying to be extra-clever, and causing much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth in the process.

Hi - thanks for info. I tried the elevated command prompt procedure, but I am mystified by "click on Continue in the UAC prompt". All I can find is the window opened by CMD.EXE - maybe I'm being a bit thick (apologies) but I've never heard of the UAC prompt. And I still get this annoying "Error 1406" when trying to set up Office 2003 - it doesn't let me go any further, and just rolls back so that I have to start all over again. Even more annoyingly, it tells me to contact my IT department for assistance, which is a bit superfluous for a home installation.

Hi again,
Does your licence for Office 2003 allow you to use it again on another computer?
Re your original comment "I'm trying to install Office 2003 as a precursor to installing an upgrade version of Office 2007."
Have you considered forgetting Office 2003 & installing a trial version of Office 2007?

This installation I am attempting has a rather convoluted history. I first bought an upgrade copy of Office2007 on Ebay - I already had Office97 so I expected that an upgrade would be OK. However, when I tried to install it, it told me that Office97 was too old (or words to that effect) and it couldn't be upgraded - I had to find something younger. So I then bought Office2003, installed it on my older computer running XP Pro, and had no difficulty installing 2003 and subsequently upgrading to 2007.

But it appears that Vista has other ideas. I can't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to use the same 2003 disk a second time - there can't be any notification to the disk that it has been used once, because the computer I used it in last time didn't have a DVD or CD write facility.

However, I think I have sorted it now, thanks to your "elevated command prompt" message - it must have done something. Previously, when I received the error message, the options were Abort, Retry, and Ignore. The latter two did nothing, but the Abort choice rolled the installation back to zero. This time, using the Ignore choice I was able to complete the installation, although some features didn't work. However, it was enough to allow installation of 2007.

I didn't consider downloading a trial version of 2007 because I assumed that it wouldn't accept the upgrade version I have.

Many thanks for your assistance, and may you have many hundreds of grandchildren.

Had similar prob with new updates to office 2003. They wouldn,t install with 1406 error.
In the end it was an easy fix, once i knew what to do of course.
Go to your run or start and type regedit . It will bring up all your registry threads. Find the registry thread. Right click on it and go to privileges. edit all to full rights and apply. This did it for me.
Cheers
