Side-By-Side Configuration is Incorrect

Last night I was using my computer and playing games, It was working fine. I shut it down and the next morning when I turned it on it asked me to restart to finish the windows updates... so I did. (it was an update for vista x64 systems) After it started back up none of my touch buttons worked, mouse pad, or any of my programs besides my Internet Explorer x64 which is what i'm using right now... Anytime I try to open any program it gives me the message (The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.) I tried restoring my system to before the update which didn't work, so I tried restoring it from about a week ago and that did nothing... I need some help with this....

Thanks in advance.

This may give you a clue as to what your message means.

I believe that "Side by Side" architecture uses a trick in a file called a 'manifest' to call a special system file instead of the regular Vista system file (a .dll). The error is saying that finding that special dll written for that application is not working somehow. (side-by-side configuration is incorrect).
Something has changed those special application files. Perhaps disk corruption, perhaps conflict with something new.

You should check in Event Viewer for more details.
Start - Search - Type in Event Viewer - Windows Log - Application.

yup its a missing or corrupt .DLL file JMH suggestion Event Viewer - Windows Log - Application

there may be a sisdebyside error entry , that should tell which dll is corrupted , from there you can download another

however it would be easier to reinstall yuor touchpad drivers and that may put it right

or try typing
sfc /scannow into an elevated command prompt (run command prompt as administrator) that will search the dll library for missing or corrupt dll's and repair them (you will need you os install dvd)

Im not sur if that'll work though as its not an operating system dll at fault

I'm having the exact same problem. I just tried the sfc /scannow and it said there were some corrupt files but that it couldn't fix them. Has anyone solved this problem?

My Computer

The solution in 3 easy steps:

1) Run As Administrator - CMD Prompt
type: sfc /scannow
Let it finish and reboot.

2) Download and Install these files:
a. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
b. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
c. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
d. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
e. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

I just followed the 3 steps outlined above by jhaglund and congratulate you on getting me sorted. I've been trying since November '10 to get this problem fixed, and just found this forum and by following each of the steps (was a bit doubtful/fearful I admit...) but it really worked and I now have all my Microsoft Office applications working again. Many thanks.

Hey guys im having a problem with Windows Live Messenger.

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_none_5090ab56bcba71c2.manifest. Component 2: C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_e163563597edeada.manifest.

This is what is displayed in my Event Viewer and i have no idea to fix it. Any help would be greately appreciated.

He recommened the above. These won't help with the Side by Side problem. They are good general advice, but won't solve it.

The above is what solved the problem in all of your cases, but copied from my posts.

However, there is information missing. This is not the perfect tutorial. You can find better advice in my posts. I shall post the two most important posts:

This is where my posts come into play:

In theory at least, this problem can be corrected. There are two things that you must do.

STEP ONE:

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

STEP TWO:

This step will be more helpful, but is more complex.

1: Get three different programs which all generate this error message lined up ready to run.

2: Open an elevated Command Prompt. Elevated Command Prompt

3: Type sxstrace trace -logfile:sxstrace.etl into the Command Prompt window, and press enter ONCE! Set it continue to log!

4: Start the first program. Let it generate the error message, and OK out of the error message. Once the program has closed, start the next program. Once this one has closed, start the last one. Make sure that all three generate an error. I need you to make absolutely sure that you do not run programs that work while logging!

5: Go back to the Command Prompt and press enter again to end the logging.

6: Type sxstrace parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:%userprofile%\Desktop\sxstrace.txt and press enter.

Upload the file sxstrace.txt from your Desktop.

Please make sure to include both sfcdetails.txt, and sxstrace.txt in your next post.

Thanks!

Richard

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :D:D:D I have been struggling with this side-by-side error for days now!!! See below in the quote below from jhaglund's post... these are the only steps I did. After I did those steps and rebooted, MS Office worked again!!!

FYI: I, too, had problems running the sfc /scannow. It kept telling me I wasn't the administrator when I am the administrator and only user (I double checked in the control panel under User Accounts). So I rebooted, hit F8, started in safe mode with command prompt (so the C:\ prompt automatically came up), and I was able to run sfc /scannow successfully.

Hi, I am having same problem, every time I try to open my msn messenger I got this message: C:\Program Files (x86)
Windows Live
Messenger\msnmsgr.exe and sayd: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details.
I am trying to scan with ParetoLogic PC Healh advisor, but I just got to this forum and looks to me very helpful, I also try to run as administrator but it show me the same message, Should I go to the files and delete it all and download all the programs you said? I also uninstall all the programs from window live message and re-installed again and its the same message. I will really appreciate any help from you guys, I need msn working tonight, I would be great for my husband to see his boys and chat for a little bit. Thank you.

I don't understand this Forum either: I did not send that message. I don't have MS 2010: it is 2007.
I don't really understand how to read or answer these messages or what all these buttons mean: Quote, Multi etc. I'm sorry. I must be an idiot!
