Can't click through some links in emails

Recently, I often get this error message when I try to click through a link in an incoming email: "Windows cannot find 'http://www.vista64.com/register.php?a=ver'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again". This is a new thing - it didn't happen before, and I could click through all links in emails with no problems. Can anyone tell me how to correct this?

Thats not a valid link. You get a file not found and 404 error. what email client are you using?

Sorry - I'm not very techie.... not sure what do you mean by email 'client'? My emails come through Vista Mail through my ISP - which is cogeco.ca. Is that what you mean?

I just doublechecked, and what I think you're referring to as the email 'client' is actually called 'Windows Mail' - not 'Visa Mail'.

I got that same error thingie again, when I tried to click through the link in the email that you'd just sent to me.

When anybody posts here in response to my question, I get an email. It's from 'Vista Forums' .... here's a copy/paste below of the email that I received as a result of your last comment here in the Forum. I got that same type of error message when I clicked on the link below. I had to go to IE and enter the URL for 'Vista Forums' in order to get here.... couldn't use the link below.

So do normal e-mail link from other sources work? is it just the emails from vistax64.com that dont?

I just checked the same link in my e-mail client and it works fine so your mail client is doing something to make them un-clickable.

I'm not sure whether it's only emails from vistax64.com or not. I'll pay closer attention over the next couple of days, and keep track. I'll report back.

Just checked this morning's emails, and couldn't open links on any of them. They came from various sources....Here are a few:
http://mailbox.sparkpeople.com http://click.email.canadiantire.ca www.care2.com/greenliving UPO.NET EFT Home - World Center for EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) http:/www.toysrus.ca http://clicks.hsibaltimore.com

These are all from sources that I have regularly received information from in the past and had no problem clicking through on the links sent to me in the emails. Something has gone wrong fairly recently. I did download a trial of Microsoft Office Word 2007 about a month ago? Could that be interferring in some way?

I also download Trial versions of McAfee's Total Protection and Family Protection plans. Again, I'm wondering if one or both of them are somehow interfering and creating this problem. I also downloaded them about 3 -4 wks ago.

when I click on them they work. are you sure its your email and not your browser that is the problem? what browser are you using? has anything changed in browser or email?

do you have a backup we can restore from before the problem started happening?

I can open them in my browser too. It's just when I click on the link in the email that it doesn't connect through properly. I get the error message I described earlier, and I get a sort of 'blank' IE page.

I haven't knowingly changed anything in the browser or email setup.

And no, I don't have a backup.

Is there a place in the Install/Uninstall Programs area where one can go to 'Repair' the Windows Mail? I remember using that before on another computer when I had an earlier version of Windows OS... is that feature still available for Vista OS?

It has something to do with file associations in windows mail.
Click Start>Default Programs. Now look for Windows Mail.
Now click on Choose Defaults for this program.

Just FYI.... I had tried McAfee's internet security protection on a 1-month trial, and ended up uninstalling it about a week ago. Oddly enough, now all the links in my emails are all working normally again. So I'm assuming that the problem had something to do with the settings re emails inside the McAfee programs.
