Install seems to be frozen

Please, someone, help! I am trying to install Microsoft's Screen Recorder on Vista Home Premium with SP1 & 2 and this is my second try.

I created a new folder on my desktop and labeled it Screen Recorder download.
I downloaded the UtilityOnlineMarch092009 03.exe file to my desktop.
I clicked on it and selected to save it to this new folder I created.

There are 3 files: Screen Recorder, setup and WMEncoder. It is my understanding the encoder has to be installed first so I clicked on that. The install box opens and seems to run right along. The fills with green as it installs and according to that the install should be done and I should click Next. But above it says "Installing Windows Media runtime files ..." and there it sit frozen. It's been that way now for 20 minutes.

If I go to C/Program Files there is a folder called Windows Media Components and within that a file called Encoder and it is full of files.

I have attached screen shots of the encoder downloade box that is frozen and of the files appearing in my C drive in that encoder folder.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello Nikilet,
Have you tried just running "setup", (as administrator) on it's own ?.
When you run setup it should install all the required files, or all the files it needs.
Try it and post your results, good luck.

Thank you for your response. I've tried to install this thing twice and it seems like I did start with the setup file the first time. It interrupted with a message that this encoder had to be downloaded first and I clicked YES to that and had the same problem. I also think I ran it as administrator, but I may give this one more try per your instructions.

In Googling to try and find some help it would appear there are lots of people who have had trouble with this encoder even after they have it installed, and in one link there was a question as to whether there was a problem between this and Vista and the response given was yes. Do you have any personal knowledge of this?

It didn't work. The install seems to go real fast and when it gets to the point where it says it's 'Installing Windows Media Runtime files ...' the install box fills real fast, but then it just sits there.

Thanks anyway for your suggestion.

P.S. One thing I forgot to mention ... After I know the install has to be frozen I click on Cancel and get a box asking me if I'm sure I want to cancel the installation. I click yes. The install box still won't close so I have to use Task Manager to end task. Then I go to Remove Programs and this thing is listed there. I click to uninstall it and I get a message that this is only valid for products which are installed. I've already told you that it also appears in my C/Program Files.

After all this, if you try to install something else you get a message that there is an installation in progress that has to be completed before you can install anything else.

That's why, the first time I thought I had to do a System Restore to get rid of this, which I did. I discovered on the second try that restarting cleared it.

Try another screen recorder. Otherwise have you installed all updates and runtime files?

Thanks - I've been searching for one.

As to updating, I always apply my Windows Updates right away, but anything beyond that I wouldn't know what to do as far and updating runtime files. And curiously, I have been getting some runtime-type errors.

I have a question on this. In my Remove Programs it shows that I have this Visual C 2005 update kb 973923. If I should have this 2008 version, why wouldn't it come through my Windows Updates? Please understand that I'm trying to learn, to understand the whys.

As to the Windows Installer, how do I know I don't already have this version?

2008 is for visual studio 2008, 2005 is for visual studio 2008. Both of these will install files that are missing. That's why the 2008 is a "redist". Create a restore point before these, then after, reboot and run Windows Update. More updates will probably come through.
