Vista - norton defrag: 33 hours and going...

so, i'm running norton 360 defrag on my computer with intel core 2 duo p8400 processor, 4gb rm & 320gb hard drive. I'm not sure but i think the counter on the norton defrag goes to 2400 hrs..and then resets. It has gone 1 full loop and is now on 9 hrs time elapsed. how long should i let it run?

my hd did not have enough empty hd spaçe (15%) to defrag the first time. I moved stuff to external hd and now have 60gb free space.

That's not right. You better stop it and try the Vista defrag.

Also try running chkdsk /f with an elevated command prompt.

ok i stopped it. I'm now running chkdsk w/ repai and intent to run vista defrag next. I wonder if the fact that i compresses my c drive has anything to do with it (except the program fikes)? I read about compressing me comp in a magazine and thought it'd be a good idea. It didn't seem to bother the performance at all...

After chkdsk runs, reboot to safe mode and try defrag again.

ok. What r the benfiits to running it in safe mode?

For one thing, you may have a better chance of successfully getting your defrag to run. AND, if you can run it in Safe Mode, and cannot run it in normal mode, this can indicate some type of conflict we can search for.

I had this problem when vista was first released with norton system works & i had damaged my recovery partition also back then vista defrag didnt have independent check box for each drive. If you have a recovery partition you could try unchecking it and just try defragging your C drive? otherwise you might find this tutorial helpful

OK. I started my Vista defrag last night. It's been running for almost 9 hours. I started my computer in safe mode but the defrag utility wouldn't start. So, I restarted in regular mode and started the defrag. I did saw the option to defrage both my c and the recovery and left both checked; will this be OK?
