McAfee (Virus!) - HP Pavilion DV6

I did a full system scan (McAfee). McAfee has dected 6 items. They are trojans.
List of detected items:
1. C:\PROGRAM FILES\HEWLETT-PACKARD\TOUCHSMART\MEDIA\K…
2. C:\SWSETUP\MSMVP\DATA1.CAB
3. C:\PROGRAM FILES\HEWLETT-PACKARD\TOUCHSMART\MEDIA\K…
4. C:\PROGRAM FILES\HEWLETT-PACKARD\TOUCHSMART\MEDIA\K…
5. C:\PROGRAM FILES\HEWLETT-PACKARD\TOUCHSMART\MEDIA\K…
6. C:\PROGRAM FILES\HEWLETT-PACKARD\TOUCHSMART\MEDIA\K…

There was an option of restoring the file or removing it. I removed them. If I restored it, other files could get infected. I did all the Windows updates and installed programs. Then I put McAfee later, I did a full scan. Since I removed the infected files, does this effect my computer or anything else ? Will I still be able to upgrade to Windows 7 ?

It shouldn't effect anything else. To be safe and sound I would scan using the free version of these two tools just to be absolutely sure. Update them before running and let them remove anything they find, reboot if asked to.

So since it was reccomended if I removed those files due to 'Artemis' (Trojan). So nothing should be affected. So everything is normal. Everything on my laptop was fine, nothing was affected. Okay I will use those softwares just to be sure if there are more viruses.

Ah you didn't mention that, Artemis is McAfee's "Active Protection" engine and sometimes makes mistakes. See this sticky I made at the McAfee forums: "Artemis" & Other Possibly False Detections - McAfee Support Forums

So it's not even a virus ? Oh okay. HP anyway told me if I had these type of viruses or artemis, then they told me just to remove it. Well I removed those files and they haven't messed up my HP MediaSmart Program. It is working properly.

Re: McAfee (Virus!) - HP Pavilion DV6

I didn't say it wasn't an infection, only that Artemis is there to detect unknowns and sometimes can be wrong. In this case obviously it wasn't.

I have another user who runs a keylogging software to monitor his kids and it is being detected as a trojan, which isn't surprising considering that most keyloggers work like trojans. He is in the process of appealing it with McAfee's Threat Center.

Re: McAfee (Virus!) - HP Pavilion DV6

So basically I don't need to worry any more. So everything is sorted out for me. I removed the 'Artemis' on McAfee. Everything is working. I am upgrading to Windows 7 soon. Is Windows 7 good ?

Thanks for your support

Yes, I wouldn't worry. As I said, if you want to be really sure run those two applications, but I think you've taken care of things OK.

Good luck.
