streaming with my laptop, possible?

I thought I would ask someone in this forum, seeing I can;t get any real answers in the program forum related to my problem

Just too many different possible answers.

Here it is, I am trying to use a media server to stream to my xbox360. I have an Acer Aspire 6930 laptop, 3GB of RAM, dual core Intel. Works great for almost everything I need. I have the server working well, streaming (mostly) and transcoding to WMV9 then streaming,IF needed.

I am having trouble with only a few types of files, MKV and certain MP4's with multiple AAC tracks. Now, I have ways of altering the files so they can be be played by the Xbox, but these are time consuming and sometimes I just wanna play them without having to transcode.

I also prefer HD 720p MKV files for quallity reasons and I understand the demand transcoding this would cause on resources, BUT I thought my computer could handle it.

It has almost NO problem playing these files using my media players, it just seems to be the transcoding, then streaming process that is killing my sytem.

MY QUESTION IS:

Am I wasting my time trying to transcode/stream HD MKV files with this laptop or is there any way of tweaking my system to handle this? Is my system just not powerful enough?

If this question was inappropriate for here, let me know, I am just so frustrated with the multitude of varying answers in the program forum, I thought I would ask some people who seem to really know what they are talking about.
