Directx messing up

Ive just formatted my hard drive and got a new graphics card -ATI 4870.

When I try to run a game, using 'steam' it tries to install directx before failing, so I found the download myself and tried, it failed.
The error said:
'[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]INTERNAL SYSTEM ERROR OCCURRED refer to DxError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine problem.'

So what any ideas, I need directx but I cant have directx.

Wasnt sure if this post should go in here, gaming or graphics card. I figured here as its more a software issue.

Can you confirm that you have installed all the latest drivers, Video, Sound, Chipset, and drivers for any third party hardware/software.

Well im pretty sure im all up-to-date.
The graphics drivers are definitely.
Ive been running those driver programs that find all your missing drivers, then ive found them myself, so there could be a chance ive missed 1 or 2.
Currently installing a windows vista service pack 1 - whatever that does.

Install service pack two as well.
If you go to the Asus site, you can download all your chipset drivers, sound drivers, from there.

If your tempted to update your Bios, don't do it through the software option, use EZ Flash in the Bios itself. (much safer)

I installed pack 2, and downloaded directx sucessfuly. Game work.
