It seems like your new Dell should be under, at least, a one year warranty. How can they charge you to fix it? Have you spoken to one or two other customer service people at Dell? The problem, of course, may be with the software and not the hardware (and I don't know what is covered in your Dell warranty) but if, for example, your Vista is an OEM product (meaning that it was pre-installed when you got the computer), then Dell should cover it. Otherwise, Microsoft would cover it, but either way, you should be covered.
I did call dell and my 3 year war. is for hardware only they will not cover any softeware. Yes they did install the OEM. They want $50.00 for one time. Or 250.00 for 1 year service of software. This will be my last dell. They sent me Windows 7 they told me to install it. I'm scared to now. For will they say that I changed OEM that was installed. I don't know.

Sorry to hear that kegman. I don't have Dell, I have an HP laptop, so I don't know what Dell's policy is regarding OEM installed software, but I know that it's universally true that Microsoft will not provide free service to it, (and they refer you back to the computer manufacturer), so one would logically think that the manufacturer would cover it. Take a good, long, thorough look through the Dell website, and see if you can find their policy on OEM installed software. On HP's site I found it in the section dealing with returns and exchanges, but on Dell's site it could be anywhere. At least that way you'll know the official position of the company, and you won't have to rely on what some employee is telling you, which might or might not be correct.
Does your 3 year warranty give you home service? If it does, why don't you push for a technician to come out and look at the machine -- because it could very well be a hardware problem. And while he's out there, perhaps he'll agree to install the Windows 7 for you. I think you've got a good point, that Dell sent it to you, and what if it did void some warranty if you installed it?

I have done that also. I installed and uninstalled till blue in the face. I really hate Vista.
