Windows Media Player suddenly NOT RESPONDING

Can someone help.....PLEASE. I see a lot of issues for Windows Media Player but not any solutions that have worked for me. I have Windows Media Player 11 on Vista 64 Home Premium and everything was working just fine until all of a sudden I click on WMP and it does not respond which then caused problems with even shutting down the computer. I have rebooted I have tried scandisk and I have tried re-register of files such as regsvr32 wmp.dll and so forth and still no luck. I have also done a system restore to various times when I thought things were working just fine and still no luck.

What is the solution to get Windows Media Player working???????????????????

Try to start the wmplayer.exe from C > Program files > Windows Media Player. If that does not work, replace the whole Windows Media Player folder - copy one from another system > take ownership of yours > rename it Windows Media Player (2) > drag the the new one into the Program files.
But you could also try sfc /scannow in elevated cmd. Maybe it can fix it.

I tried starting from program files and I tried sfc /scannow from the command prompt.....I am not sure what is meant by "elevated cmd" so if that is something different than what I did with scannow I need more explanation. Also, "take ownership of yours > rename it Windows Media Player (2)" I am not exactly following what I should do for copying another WMP to my files when it has the take ownership part......how do I do that exactly? I don't want to delete or copy until I have the right steps down.

Thanks so much for the advice, I unfortunately still need a bit more help.

1. elevated mode for cmd means "run as administrator" - else you get nothing done in cmd. Best is you go to All Programs > Accessories > Right click on "Command Prompt" > Properties > Advanced > check the box "run as administrator > OK > Apply. From now on, cmd will always run in elevated mode. And don't forget the "APPLY".

2. To install the "take ownership" functions, go here: ( Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista :: the How-To Geek ). Once you have that, you can manipulate the Program files - e.g. rename Windows Media Player folder into Windows Media Player (2) - after you took ownership of this folder. It will just give it another name, but it will stay put.
Now you can get (copy) a Windows Media Player folder from another (functioning) system (on a USB stick or SD card) and drag it into Program Files - just make sure you drag the real folder and not some shortcut. Now your system can work off this new folder without getting confused by the old (most likely defunct) folder (since you renamed it).

Thanks I understand what you are referring to now and I have tried the scandisc but that didn't help. I am leery about having two copies media player on my computer which would be the case with renaming the file and then using the copied files. That seems like a waste of space but then to delete the original and only have the copy seems like it could also lead to issues. So I am still trying to find a solution and keep this in mind as a last resort.

Well, you do as you feel comfortable. The size of the WMP folder in Program Files is 6.3MB - not a big dent on your disk. No need to throw the renamed one out - but you can once the new setup works.
Let us know when you find another solution. I would be interested to know.

I appreciate your help and I have marked the information for "take ownership" so that I will be prepared to follow with your suggestion. I am just hoping for a simple fix somewhere first which may not happen in which case your fix will start to sound very good indeed.

I guess my problem is that with Windows Media Player it seems that what is or is not in those files may or may not be causing the issue of it not working. IF I double click on a song stored on my computer Windows Media Player will open and play that song but it will not let me click on any other tab to get to my library or go to the files to find another song while I am listening a song and naturally it won't open as it is unresponsive when I double click on the icon to start it plus it seems to then lock up other things after I shut it down via the task manager. So something is screwy but I looking for it is a needle in a haystack and finding the best fix is no easy task.

Thanks again.

Re: WMP DIED?? AN EASY FIX!!!!

:roflmao:Easy Fix. SRS Sandbox-a 20$ app. SRS is native to WMP11. After months of looking for a solution, I came across SRS Labs site. I purchase this app. Installed it and wow-sound. This is a killer prm which was primarly caused by MS. The SRS app reconnect the busted software links. post SP1 and SP2 updates. I am back in the tune zone and super happy I made this change.

SRS-WMP Connection: WMP screen. View-Enhancements: SRS WOW is in this group. I cant tell you how this works, technically, but it does. :roflmao:
