External Drive Backup Problem

Ello,

I have been successfully backing-up to my Freecom hard drive classic 3.5 500GB via Windows Live however the drive keeps on filling up rather than overwriting/updating the current data, which is what I'd assumed was supposed to happen.

Is this how it goes or have I missed something? The only option I have is to delete the current data and start again every month which is a bit of a pain!

Kind Regards,

Billy

I have not used this particular program - but many other backup/imaging programs. Usually they let you specify the amount of storage you want to give them. Although reading thru the documentation of your program it appears that it grabs 25GBs per default.
Did it in your case already store more than 25GBs of data?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure of the exact GB figure however the external is now 335 GB! It wasn't anything near that after the first time (I have moved all my films to make space recently).

What are those 335GB - total, used, free ?? Maybe you can post what's on the disk - open the disk and make a "Tiles" or "Details" view setting. Then it shows the sizes of the files (not of folders).

Hi,
It was 335GB out of 500 full. I deleted everything and started again (took a while as some files are pretty tricky to delete).
It's highly likely the same thing will happen again tho as I've been here before, Iwas under the impression that the backup is supposed to overwrite the data held (on the external drive) rather than continnually adding to it (say by 25GB).
I have only started backing up since buying Vista in July 09... shame about Windows 7!

May I suggest that rather using the native Vista functions (which works only off and on anyhow) that you use free Macrium. It is super simple, super efficient and quite fast. Create a folder on your external and when it grows too much (which will take a long time), delete some of the old stuff which is absolutely no problem. Read my little tutorial here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/261727-image-your-system-free-macrium.html
